What did everyone think of this movie?
I think it has an excellent cast and it's very well acted. The problem I have with it is the writing is not that great.
There are too many storylines in this movie and none of them are given sufficient time.
Ronald Pickup's character Norman could be completely cut out of the movie. The point of his character could have been covered by Celia Imrie's character.
Penelope Wilton and Bill Nighy's characters are not given enough time to develop. So by the end of the movie, their decisions seem to be odd.
Tom Wilkinson's character starts out with a good storyline and then runs out of steam. And by the end of the movie what happens to his character is just poor writing.
Celia Imrie has the start of a good storyline, but once again underdeveloped.
Same with Maggie Smith. Good storyline, but her character jumps from Point A to Point Z with no middle ground.
Judi Dench's character has the most complete character arc, but there are moments of strangeness. Is there any point to that scene where she calls her son? Did something get left on the cutting room floor?
I think the secondary characters of the young lovers work the best. They seem to have good characters arcs. But the scene with the son's mother is wrong. Only on 22 minute sitcoms do people have that quick a change of heart.
Why don't you do a search for the other threads on this? Or is searching just for liberals?

I saw this last Saturday and the cast gave very strong performances. The story was very creative and I really enjoyed the setting as well.

JC, sorry I forced you to click on a thread that you wouldn't normally have clicked on. And if I could give you back the 30 seconds of your life that it took you to hit "Post Message" I would trade all of my Playbills for the chance to give that part of your life back to you. The search feature doesn't seem to work so well as I tried it and nothing came up.
Here Goth.

Awesome movie by the way.
How strange. The search feature seems to work fine for me.
And I dont want that 30 seconds back (or this 30 seconds). I consider them a gift since you never respond when called out on your BS 200 times a day so getting a response on this is a real honor.
