What is your favorite Mexican restaurant in NYC? I have a friend coming into town who loves Mexican food.
Any suggestions?

I ate in Rosa Mexicana just today! The one near Union Square area. I had the best dessert a cake with meringue on it and it was soaked in three different types of milk and had a salsa of strawberries and mangoes on the plate. It was killer!!!
The guacamole was delicious as was the quesadilla and the chicken and salad which had mangoes, jicama, peppers, tomatoes and a lovely dressing. I want to go back soon. We had their famous pomagranite margheuritas but they were a little too strong for my taste. GO!! Not cheap though.

Yeah, Rosa Mexicana is always at the top of mexican food lists. And it is great -- as far as sit down places go.
It's impossible to find good fast Mexican food, though. That is the only problem NYC has -- no good mexican food.
I'd say the best we've got in Chipotle.

Thanks for those tips! If I get in the mood for Mexican food during my upcoming visit to NYC, I'll try and check one or both of those out!
Prices for these, anyone? Say, per person, average, with 20% tip?
I don't drink alcohol, so I'd have water, tea, or cola with a meal.
Just a ballpark estimate to give me an idea is fine.

I like Rosa Mexicana. I also love Zarela on the East Side.
For inexpensive Mexican, I like Blockheads on the East Side.
They make healthy mexican on request. I had a whole wheat burrito, with grilled chicken, brown rice and beans.
They even have soy cheese and lowfat sour cream.
And you can't beat their sangria for 4.50 or Margaritas, Mohitos for $3.50.

Corine, Zarella is known to be an excellent upscale Mexican restaurant. I have yet to dine there. Also, her son Aaron Sanchez is a great chef and has a restaurant in Miami. He has even competed on Iron Chef.

I have been to the west side Blockheads on 50th. The food and atmosphere is not as good. The food at the East side one in the 50'S was 100 percent better and it is a nicer environment.
The one by Worldwide Plaza has less room inside.
Worldwide Plaza is better on a nice day for drinks.
It is a chain, but for some reason the East Side one has better food, better service and better waitstaff.
I just ate there on Wed. It was good. The meal at the West Side location a few months ago was not even edible.

Posted: 7/3/06 at 12:25pmWait a minute. Back up. Did someone in this thread actually say that Chipotle is the best Mexican food on Manhattan? And McDonald's has the best burgers, too, I suppose?

Best Burgers: 21 Club (If you can afford it)(I can't)
So: Jackson Hole or:
Big Knicks- Greasy spoon but the burgers are fantastic and cheap.
Poor writers have a way of finding all the good inexpensive solutions.

Posted: 7/3/06 at 5:13pmDon't go to Chipotle. They have numerous locations throughout the country. While their burritos are good, there are bound to be better Mexican places.
