Best/Most Affordable Hotel in NYC?

I'm planning on coming up to NYC for my first trip since moving in '06! Was wondering, what's the best/most affordable hotel to stay in for two-three days while there? Preferably close to Times Square, of course. But whatever will help my pockets. lol

Just for funsies: Planning on seeing The Nance (the whole reason for the trip), Matilda, Macbeth and I'll Eat You Last. :3

I feel like the Westin in Times Square usually has decent prices and I never have any complaints at a Westin. If you are flying in I would see what hotel and flight deals there are on Priceline or one of those sites. I can usually find decent hotel prices when booking hotel and flight together. I always stay at the Ganesvoort in the meat packing district, but don't know how their deals are!

Your best bet is to not stay in NYC. I usually stay in Stamford CT for less than $100 a night (the Hampton Inn is very nice and has a nice breakfast buffet each morning that is included in the price). Then you just take the Metro North into GCT. I can usually go for three nights and it costs less than 1 night in the city. Don't forget NYC has a huge hotel tax that adds an additional $40 to $60 a night to your bill. Staying in the city is cost prohibitive --though it you absolutely MUST then the St James is very nice and only 1 block from Times Square.

I third the Pod. Also check Travelzoo...you may have to "subscribe," but not a biggie. Also quikbook, Hotwire and Priceline.

When I was younger and broke(r) I always stayed at the West Side Y, off Central Park West and a stone's throw from Lincoln Center.

For around $100 a night you get a private room, semi-private bath, very rude (although helpful) staff, and a great location to most of what you would want to do in Manhattan.

If you don't mind spartan accommodations and aren't planning on spending that much time in your room, one of the YMCAs of NYC is a great deal.

The secret of the West Side Y is to get the top floor...You get a huge private bathroom down the hall.
I found the area very safe at night. The rooms are very small, but clean...There is also a pool.

@Kristie - I always used to get a single on the top floor - clean, conveniently located facilities and very quiet. Also, having access to the Y amenities is great, I agree. Love that the Lincoln Center subway stop is a block away. I didn't appreciate the convenience until my first trip to the city in winter :)

Can I ask a not-unreasonable question that might better help the suggestions: what do you consider affordable? $100? Less than $100 (which is pretty much impossible)? How much are you willing to spend? Give us a specific price range and we can help you better.
