Rodney, if you're looking for a 60's series that is in that direction, you might consider The Andy Griffith Show, which started in 1960.
and why did we leave out the 50's for the BEST comedy ever...
I LOVE LUCY
it is still as fresh and funny 50 years later -- Lucy did it all in that series....
I Love Lucy was, and still is the show. The Chocolate Factory is the funniest thing I have ever seen.

It's also amazing to realize that Lucy and Desi created many of the parameters for sitcoms that are still in full use today. The episode of Raymond this past Monday was done on a unit set using three cameras in front of a live audience - all started by DesiLu.
I Love Lucy ROCKS!!!
As has already been pointed out, without Lucy & Desi we'd still be watching sitcoms with that vomitizing "canned" laughter.
Lucy can do ANYTHING: stomp on grapes, impersonate Tallulah Bankhead, tango w/eggs in her shirt, you name it.
I FIRMLY believe Lucy reruns will continue well into the 24th Century.
P.S. And who could forget "vitametavegamin"?
