Honestly--craigslist is how I've gotten all 3 places I've lived in during my time in NYC. Helps avoid broker fees, too.

There is a Facebook group called Gypsy Housing that you may want to check. It's primarily actors and others in the performing arts looking for sublets/subletters, but you'll also find people looking for roommates, to have somebody take over a lease, etc.
