Biden and Palin on Gay Rights

After I've won them for you, you can fight as hard as you want for the right to call them "marriage."

It's not about calling it marriage, it's about recognizing the smoke screen that semantics throw over things. If it was really about the word "marriage" more people would be on board with giving marriages back to Jesus.

I've thought about this a lot since yesterday, and I DO agree that it would be a great step forward, but I still don't grasp completely how settling for what you're thrown is that big a step for equality. If the civil unions that many of you think we are so close to do afford us all the rights one gets when one is civilly married, then I'll probably stop complaining, but until then I'm just not 100% convinced that baby steps are really the way to go. I can't help but shake the fear that the straight hand that feeds us will finally have it's fill if we keep coming back to the table for more.

But I'm still available to sing at your weddings, "weddings", civil unions and commitment ceremonies. :)

I'm glad they don't want to burn us at the stake, but honestly I'm the gay Veruca Salt on this issue...

I want it now!

Daddy will buy equal rights for me, won't you, Daddy?! And I'll sing the whole damn number if I have to, to get it!

I do not understand why you guys think it's settling. It's not like civil unions are the end of the road. They are in many cases a point on the map--the destination being full equal civil rights.

I don't think I or PJ or others disagree with you that separate is not equal. That anything other than full equal civil rights is wrong. We just see the reality of the process and progress.

EIGHTY YEARS to fully instate interracial marriage. Please tell me that's not a difficult concept to understand. It wasn't right. It's not right. But it's the reality we have to bear.

I don't think it's settling at all. I think it's baby steps.

But we're not "there" yet. And I'm not satisfied.

Grateful? I suppose so. Tolerance is better than being burned at the stake, sure.

But tolerance isn't acceptance, either.

I'm happy enough, for now, but looking forward to the future when we're all treated equally in the same arena.

I think we agree on all that. :)

I'm a gemini. Half of me is practical and patient and all that. The other half is as damn mad and HAD. IT. as you guys.

Thank God for liquor.

It just seems like an unnecessary (and possibly distracting) detour, but I am happy that so many of you are happy about it. This is an instance where I certainly hope that I'm wrong. I hope that if Obama does win and the ball DOES get rolling that perhaps I'll start feeling the way you do.

I completely understand seeing civil unions as a detour. I think it will be more that civil unions break down the barriers. They show the fact that separate is not equal and then come crashing down with a Supreme Court ruling.

I imagine this as a fusion of the school segregation laws that gave us the expression to begin with and the interracial marriage fight.

It's terribly sad that our country refuses to learn from its history.

I was wondering if you all watched the same debate I did. Because in the debate I WATCHED Biden basically said the same thing Palin said.... He did not agree with gay marriage and neither does Obama. I think it's funny how everyone keeps quoting Palen, but fails to mention the fact that Biden and Obama do NOT support gay marriage either.

Yeah, well maybe you ought to take two whole minutes and actually read the thread.

RENT123,

What Phyllis Rogers Stone said. Also, that gave Biden a GREAT opportunity to bring home the fact that Palin just said she'd support gay rights (not marriage) and that he was going to take her word for it and take her at face value. That caused her to be flustered and give a failed attempt to backtrack.

"[Gore] was widely perceived as arrogant. If you know something, you're not smart. You're a smarty-pants. It's annoying. People get annoyed with your knowledge. It goes back to high school, to not doing your homework ... 'There's something I should know, I don't know why I should know it but someone knows it and I don't. So I'm going to have to make fun of him now.'" -Sarah Vowell, The Partly-Cloudy Patriot

I really think the Hateful God of Abraham just hates bisexuality. I would never lie with a woman like I lie with a man. Unless she's really hairy.

The thing that irked me about Palin's response to this question was her saying that she's not a homophobe. I hate when people are like, "Oh, I'm not a homophobe, I have a gay uncle!" "I'm not racist, I have a black friend!" Just because you're aquainted with someone who's different than who, doesn't mean you hold that bias against them.
