I'm in theory in agreement, although Obama is an actual office-holding politician, while the examples on the right Maher gave were one former politician and two daughters of politicians. Much like when Laura Bush was everyone's gay icon for a nanosecond, these aren't people with any real political power.

And it's great to say that polling now says half the nation is pro-gay marriage but many states are STILL working anti-gay legislation (Indiana, I'm looking at you) in addition to the myriad states that already have such legislation on the books.

I had not thought about that but you are right.I wonder if Obama will come out for gay marriage soon after his second term or just wait until he is safely out of office.

If Obama wins a 2nd term, I can't see him waiting until he's out of office. Every politician, particularly a president, is concerned with legacy. Right or wrong*, the objective of the 1st term is to win a 2nd term, and the objective of the 2nd term is to define your legacy.

* It's wrong.
