If it's a big party, then yeah, he's definitely a jerk.
If it's a small gathering, I can see where he might be hesitant to have someone he doesn't know there. But, if it's the only way you can attend, he should be able to get over it.

No, it's some friends of his getting together at a restaurant, maybe 12 or so. Some are from out of town and don't know each other, so you wouldn't think it would be that big of a deal, but I guess it is.
By the way, Rath, I thought you were in a relationship.

Oh well then yeah, it doesn't seem like it should be a problem.
And no, I'm not in a relationship. Don't know where you got that.

That is a surprising response, especially since you are friends.
What's funny, though, is that if a friend was to bring someone I don't know to MY party, big or small, I would be totally cool with that. But I would have serious reservations about going to someone else's birthday party, especially if it's a small event.
I never claimed to make sense.

Posted: 9/16/06 at 3:00pmI guess I was thinking of someone else. Anyway, we aren't going to attend. Petty? Perhaps, but I just hate immature, selfish, thankless whiners, especially over the age of 40.

Posted: 9/16/06 at 3:13pmJust to weigh in, I don't like a big deal to be made about my birthday. At the same time, I like simple things like receiving cards in the mail, email greetings, and going out for a family dinner. Mostly I like it pretty low-key. Not sure how I'll feel when it's time for my 50th next year. Still don't think I'll want a huge deal made of it though.

I would have a hard time attending, especially after his response. I mean, if he had explained WHY it was a problem, maybe. But freaking out, and then just hanging up... no time.
I had a friend who didn't like her girlfriend's fiance, so she only invited her to the wedding. I thought that was in poor taste.
