Funny... the only time I didn't make a big deal of my birthday was when I was in a relationship.

My 16th birthday was the worst.
I think I have birthday phobia.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who has reservations about birthdays and the importance people put on them.
But I do agree with Day Dreamer on that I always take a moment each birthday to just realize I'm alive another year and look at how far I've come.

I don't usually make a big deal about my birthday. I had a big party when I turned 21 (in college), a very small gathering at a karaoke bar when I turned 30, and now I just tend to go out to dinner with my husband on the day of my bday. (Although last year, I spent it singing Christmas carols at a country club, and hubby and I had to wait several days before we could even have a dinner together...)
I may have another party when I hit the big 4-0, though. Might be fun!
P.S. I am also an only child.

I agree with DayDreamer. Given the alternative, I believe birthdays are gifts, and should be cherished. I like to celebrate them for about 3 weeks: the week before, the week of, and the week after.
This year I turned 50 and PalJoey'sPal turned 40.
I had a big birthday party for his 40th: 85 of his friends, going back to high school, male and female, gay and straight, at a sleazy downtown bar one Saturday night before it opened, with a rauchy opera-singing drag queen as the entertainment. For my 50th, a group of friends went down to Fort Lauderdale and stayed at a very cool guesthouse for a long weekend of sunning, sinning, eating and drinking.

Fits right in with my "significant other" clause.
Also, decade birthdays should always be celebrated in fine fashion.

Sweetie,
How old is Ms. Holly and when is her birthday? (Pal Joey)
I like spoiling other peoples dogs, birthday or not.
Personally,
I have never cared about my Birthday. Age is just a number.
I try to make each and everyday a celebration.
Life is a banquet. Celebrate your life!
Party all the time, not just on your birthday.
Sue-
Sounds like your friend is just lonely and wants to spend that time with you. Cheer him or her up. Make him feel special.

I hate when twentysomethings complain about birthdays!

Paris is perfect for 40!
But so is a sleazy bar... ;-}

Posted: 9/15/06 at 8:19pmMy birthdays always suck! My family usually takes me out to a restaraunt for lunch, they sing happy birthday, I open presents, I go home, and go to bed. Same routine every single year. I really don't have any close friends that I would want to go out and party with, but this year will be different. I am trying to get as many people together and go to a karaoke bar (I have never been to one) and just have fun.

Posted: 9/15/06 at 8:44pmMy last few birthdays have been pretty bad. Two years ago, there was a snowstorm so I had to cancel my birthday, and then last year I was sick. This year is my 16th birthday, and I think I'm going to go to dinner and a show with friends.

Birthdays are certainly what you make of them. Some don't see their day of birth as anything particularly special, while others consider it one of the most important days of the year. Personally, my birthday is a time for me to relax, surround myself with friends and family, and appreciate life regardless of what age I'm turning. Considering the hectic nature of today's lifstyle, why wouldn't you use your birthday as a day to simply enjoy yourself?
Mine's in a few weeks.
