Hurrican Sandy reminded us that NYC really could be vulnerable to extreme weather--a valuable lesson that we need to take to heart. Happily, Nemo (like his cousin, Namo) turned out to be fierce and old-school, but ultimately benign.

I went sledding in Central Park with the dog and the God-Daughter today and it was modern-day Currier & Ives: picture-perfect blue skies, snow-covered trees that could not have been improved upon by CGI, and perfect high-speed sledding conditions, with the park packed to bursting point with the kind of demographic mix that gave F.L. Olmstead and Jane Jacobs wet dreams.

The snow had stopped early enough to give the crews time to plow the streets and so the driving was easy and the adventure of the storm was recent enough that the misery that those slush-filled gutters will become is still off in the future.

A fab blizzard day.

BTW--We were standing at the corner of CPW & 81st Street when I heard a tourista say to her hubby "You could really raise kids here"--like she had just invented a crazy new formula for child rearing. And I thought--"In THIS zip code? I hope you've got about a hundred million bucks in liquid assets, babe..."
