i really don't see this as a new trend. i remember when the fad of surf trunks hit when i was still in high school and everyone was wearing knee or longer length swim trunks with bright colors and flowers and such.
the surf trunks came about because surfers needed something a bit more substantial than the speedo since the ocean tended to make mincemeat out of them. hence the heavier weight, longer length "board shorts" were born.
the 80's, hideous time of many fashion mistakes, saw those board shorts taken to extemes as seen in the "jams" shorts of the times. bright red and orange with flowers and extending to almost mid calf (yep, i had a few pairs).
based on the trend among nyc youth towards baggy, it's no surprise that the swim trunks reflect it. however if it were to be faithful to the trend, the trunks would hang somewhere around the tops of the thighs with some outlandish undershorts account for propriety.
