Anybody watch it? I made it about 20 minutes into the pilot before I just got too bloody bored to continue. Lots of sets, lots of costumes, lots of period stuff all over the place, lots of actors, lots of name dropping (Look, folks, it's PROHIBITION!!!), and I've got to say that there was more of interest in the opening credits of THE SOPRANOS than in what I managed to sit through last night.

But. There was one amazing little scene, involving a scene of domestic violence being witnessed by two children. The little girl in the scene started crying and screaming, and it was one of the most alarming things I've seen in any medium in years, the naked emotion that child was displaying was astonishing, and it made me realize how utterly phony the rest of the enterprise had been, and made me wonder how on earth they got that little girl to do that, and it made me hope she got a big old ice cream cone at the end of the day.

I'll probably give the pilot another shot, just for fairness' sake, but this episode isn't exactly stopping Mr. Scorsese's downward trajectory.

I watched it last night and I have to agree for most of it I was pretty bored. It looked fantastic but I kept wondering when something was going to happen...I even nodded off for a few minutes at one point.
But things really did pick up and get interesting towards the end. Probably in the last 20 minutes. It was enough to make me want to watch next week to see what happens.

They devoted a long time to exposition but then all of the parts fell together and it was great. It is not for everyone though (my one apt. mate left during the sex scene, and the other left after a gruesome killing).

I read that this was the slowest episode. I think that it will be really good.

I like to hit on Scorsese's post-Good Fellas decline (despite the over-hype of everything) as much as the next person but I think you can put much of the fault and praise of what is going on with the series on Terence Winter.

Winter (Basically David Chase's right hand man on The Sopranos) created/crafted the show. Scorsese liked the story and used his name to get the series greenlit by HBO and also get the very expensive budget ($20 million for the pilot alone) for the project by directing the pilot.

I haven't liked a lot of what Scorcese's done (there are only a handful of his movies I liked), but I was intrigued by the idea. I think the show COULD be good - the first episode was all right. It was enough to make me want to watch next week.

I just returned from the dark ages as both cable & internet have been out since the storm.We just got them back today. I will watch it tonight & than Hawaii 5-0.

I plan on watching this over the weekend. Reviews have been so so but the production looks amazing.HBO gives projects like this a lot of $$$. Did Martin direct this or just produce?

I kinda was intrigued by the relationship between Nookie and the women who was being abused...I wanna know where it is going

Scorsese directed the pilot and is an executive producer along with Marky Mark among a few others. The production design does share a similar feel of Scorsese's more recent period pieces (which leaves me a bit cold since it looks just so overdone).

It was alright. I kind of had issues actively being interested in the story. The art direction was fantastic though!

Just saw it last night on demand due to cable being out due to the storm.

I really enjoyed it. The slowness was due to plot exposition. I see this going on like the Sopranos. Everything about it was very well done.

Since Dexter starts Sunday, will be watching future episodes on Demand.

Now that we're about half a dozen episodes into the series is anyone liking it better?

I've enjoyed the show from the start and I really enjoy the way they weave real people (Capone, Lucky, etc) in with the fictional characters. And, of course, I always give a little cheer when I see Danny Burstein on an episode. I'm hoping to see more New York based actors as the show progresses.

I'm wildly curious about next week's episode after what happened with Margaret this week.

I hadn't been interested in watching it, but after catching a few episodes with my sister, I'm completely hooked (more than she is, in fact).

I'm also really interested in where Margaret's storyline is going to go. I'm also curious about what's going to happen with Lucy because I read an interview where Paz de la Huerta said we were going to start siding with her, but I haven't seen that happen yet.

And, of course, Richard Harrow is an excellent new character, adding an interesting bit of history to the show.

When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain. -Kad

I did finally make it through the rest of the pilot, but only barely. I just didn't give a sh*t. And seeing RAGING BULL this past weekend, and seeing what Scorsese used to be able to do, only makes this show's boredom even more unforgivable.

I mean, damn. I made it through the first episodes of SOPRANOS, MAD MEN, TREME and even SIX FEET UNDER without once thinking that I could be better spending my time watching paint dry.

I love this show. I think it's the best new show this season personally. I keep hearing people talk about how slow it is, but I disagree. I think it moves along at a steady pace. I love the cast and the art direction. I think I heard the series is gonna wrap up before Thanksgiving or around then sometime. I just hate the idea of having to wait another year for the second series to begin.

I think the last episode is December 5th.

I'm probably going to get the first season on DVD and rewatch the episodes, so I have all of the details and storylines completely straight in my head, especially for the second season.

That'll be quite a stretch since they've made her so unlikable so far. I have seen little bits of what looks like them trying to get the audience to feel sorry for her - ie sitting in the movie theatre alone, the drunk scene in the lobby of the hotel. But that makes me dislike her more.

I think the last episode is December 5th.

I'll be in Montclair that day. I hope I'm home in time for it (even though I know I can watch it on demand)

I also want to know more about Van Alden. In light of the self-flagellation, the revelation that he's been intercepting the money Jimmy's sent home to Angela and his relationship with her wife (and her infertility)... I'd really like to know what this is all building up to.

With all the nudity, gunplay, etc THAT is the moment where I had to turn away.

Being a "modern woman" I'm kinda hoping that Mrs. Van Alden finds a way to get the money and has the surgery anyway.

I like Jimmy's Sniper friend. I hope we'll see him in future episodes. The Phantom of the Opera music was a bit much,but I like Jimmy. I think Enoch is right that he is perceived as being very weak. I think this could be Jimmy's chance to take over and prove himself. It really is picking up and I think this is gonna take home numerous Emmy's next year.

Someone on another board posted a really interesting article about facial injuries in WWI and how they were dealt with. Clearly the people on Boardwalk Empire did meticulous research.

I agree...also I have a strange feeling that Jimmy is Nucky's son (not the one who died). The preview was awesome. I can't wait to see Margret confront Nucky about why he made her a widow. Also I am enjoying the sniper and Rothstein. This show has so many layers
