Bored and Sober in College club

I guess last night--er, this morning technically--the majority of my floormates took it upon themselves to celebrate "Thirsty Thursday" buy getting amazingly drunk and wreaking loud havok around the hall. I was in bed by 11:30, I did not participate in the celebration.

Is it just me, or is the rampant popularity of underage drinking in college extremely depressing? I made the decision to not drink a long time ago, and in high school it was okay because none of my friends were drinkers. But now I only know about three people who don't drink regularly and it's depressing. Thankfully, my roommate and I share the same opinion on drinking and have formed the Bored and Sober in College club... unfortunately, we're the only two members, so far.

I realize that being in college is all about having fun and discovering yourself, but I'm also here to get a good education (Lord knows I didn't get one in high school!) and it bothers me that it's considered "normal" to get sh*tfaced on a regular basis.

Would anyone like to join our groovy gang? Bored and Sober in College club There's no entrance fee!

I'm in! I also don't understand how these people can AFFORD to drink so much!! It's not just the chesp stuff they're drinking, judging by the empty bottles outside their doors almost every morning.

re: Bored and Sober in College club

well it should be the cheap stuff! when I was in my 1st year of college, seeing how far my freedom would stretch, cheap alcohol was the only economically-reliable option and was perfect for teaching us dumb kids what our limits are. hangovers from Sav-On Vodka and Natural Light are hangovers one doesn't soon forget.

that stuff is meant for slightly underage students. it's like a built-in training mechanism while you're still broke and on the meal plan. then when you get a little older, old enough where Nyquil is not a viable option EVER, you can move on to the more expensive things with less chance of going crazy with it. one drink past your average and you remember those 3-day hangovers that only Charcoal-distilled vodka from Pittsburgh can provide. Pavlov woul've been proud.

Maybe you should change the name of your club. BORED and sober isn't very appealing...and it suggests that being sober means being bored. How about something like...sassy and sober!

And I thought I was the only one!

When I was still living in the dorms last year, it seemed like such a normal thing for people to get drunk and etc. It's as if that's the only fun activity they can do.

Why can't we all be sober!?

Erik, I guess the reason our club is "bored" is b/c my school is in a town of less than 5,000 people, so there really isn't much to do aside from drink drink drink! Hopefully, once our numbers get a little higher, we can officially change our name to "Sassy, Sober, and Loving It!"

re: Bored and Sober in College club

numbers might factor in, but I think college kids just like to drink. my college was more than 20,000 students and in a city with lots to do, but with the under-21 crowd who can't go anywhere cool, it seems to come down to drinking in the dorms. maybe if you encourage people to have discussions and enrich their lives. but I suppose that would bring you to the pot-and-psychedelics-and-uppers crowds. crazy kids. you think you can protect them but...

Personally I've never understood how drinking yourself into oblivion is fun. I like to go out, have a few drinks with friends... but I know when to stop. I only drank to that 'point of no return' once in my life and I will never do it again.

We have a wet/dry bar on campus, which is nice because those of us who are still underage can go and enjoy the entertainment and whatnot. A lot of the ones who can't drink in the bar, just get drunk in their rooms then go to the bar. I can't imagine it being much fun.

They have plenty of "Mocktail" nights for us though, because the majority of the first-years are still 18 here (I'm Canadian, so the drinking age is 19). I can still have fun and not drink!

re: Bored and Sober in College club

Drinking is a regular activity at my college, but getting completely ****faced isn't as common. Of course, I have the misfortune of living in quite possibly the drunkest hall on campus, which means I get to hear the idiotic bellowing of my neighbors well into the night at least 3 times a week. Not to mention the regular e-mails from my RA asking people to please clean up the vomit/urine/**** before he fines us all for it.

Anyway, I never drink. What can I say? I like being sober; the idea of turning into a babbling fool every weekend doesn't appeal to me.

You have no idea what a college loser I am. I mean, I stay up late watching movies or talking with my BWW friends, but I never ever party...

My god, you're accusing a bunch of people on a musical theater board of being nerds?

in all seriousness, people, let's take a second here and think. have we all made plans for our intake of B-vitamins, anti-oxidants, and Omega fatty acids for the day? and if you're under 30, calcium is KEY!

re: Bored and Sober in College club

I honestly don't know how my fellow college students can afford drinking so much in NYC (I swear, I have friends who must spend $50+/week on liquor...Sorry folks, that's my entire budget for the week: food, subway, misc. stuff). The fact that drinks will run you $6 or $7 w/ tip has managed to keep me on the straight and narrow. Especially not being a big beer drinker. I'm just not a fan...though Killian's isn't that bad (but it's not like that's going to help my little economical conundrum...Only the rot gut's cheap, and I tend to pass on that). I like the girly drinks and they're wicked pricey (yay for New Englander's: "wicked" pricey! re: Bored and Sober in College club). I'll go out every once in a while and have a couple of drinks, but what can I say...I'm a nerd, and I'd rather spend my money on theatre tix than a couple of drinks every week.
But when did New Hampshire become--Such a backward wasteland of seatbelt hating crazies?...I mean, only 40 people actually live there. The others are just visitors who come for the tax-free liquor and three inches of novelty coastline. John Hodgeman on The Daily Show (1-30-07)

oh and, for the love of God, males should NEVER take Iron unless they have a condition like anemia or are in the habit of menstruating.

Echinacea is a scam too. stick to vitamin C and Zinc for colds, wheatgrass if you can get it. and most importantly, beer before liquor = never been sicker.

I believe casual drinking is good, as I participate in it as much as possible.

However getting hammered for the sake of getting hammered is rediculous.

well i drink every now and then in college.....theres no harm to it as long as u do it responisbly and dont get ****faced all the time.....theres no point in being sober all the time if u wanna let out a lil steam and relax.... but theres no reason to be ****faced all the time either...
