Blucat, I don't think arrangements have a part for countertenors. They sing with the altos or sopranos. This is a choir; it's about the voices. If his voice is right for the soprano part, let him sing soprano. I sang with a guy in my alto section last year, so I'm really not seeing the problem here.

The interesting thing is most countertenors I've sung with sing alto...not soprano. As far as I know, most countertenor pieces are written in that range. Countertenor is also a very different tone than that of a typical female voice. It's beautiful, but does not sound like a female voice necessarily, and that could affect the tone of the entire choir.

I believe our state just enacted a similar ruling for female tenors...that unless there is a medical reason, girls may not audition for tenor parts.

OMG. I am a 14-year old and had 3 guy friends audition as Sopranos and they all were allowed to in Wisconsin. But then again...Its Texas...
KRISTEN CHENOWETH To show my gratitude, I'll offer you this pointy black hat, which is just like the one Original Wicked Witch Margaret Hamilton wore in the movie! IDINA MENZEL What a great idea! How about throughout the play, you continue to offer me things like a black cloak, or a black cape, or a broom to make me look more and more like Margaret Hamilton did! These attempts at humor will be painfully predictable from a mile away! AUDIENCE collectively groans.

I wanted to sing tenor when I was in choir in high school (since we only had 4 of them), but my teacher told me there's no such thing as a female tenor and kept me as an alto. I was slightly annoyed since singing male parts is easier for me then female. Heh. Though my range is much, much better than it was 3 years ago.
