"Go watch TV!"
It depends how you define it, really. There are many TV series I follow and enjoy, but I don't consider myself a TV watcher. To me, a "TV watcher" is someone who'll sit down in front of the box and channel-surf until they find something that looks halfway decent, and then will just lather, rinse, repeat all night. How dull! I'd rather watch my Oz boxset, catch an episode or two of Wizards of Waverly Place, check the latest Have I Got News For You on the iPlayer, then go do some gardening or read a book.
Nomdeplume, were you addressing me? If so, I wasn't aware of putting anyone down.
I've definitely encountered people who will claim "I don't watch TV" with a somewhat snobbish air. It does get somewhat annoying but I just look at it as being their loss. I don't think there's any competition between theatre and TV though. Like others have said, one is a "hot" medium and one is a "cold" medium. I don't think TV's artistic merit is less because it's not live. There are great ones and then are also crap shows, just like there are good Broadway shows, and others which are crap.
