Why do people brag that they don't watch TV? Sure there's garbage on TV but most books that are published are romance novels- you might as well brag "I don't read."

Why do you presume it is bragging?
Some people, I among them, just don't like TV. In fact, I dislike it strongly as a medium and much prefer the excitement of live performance.
It has its uses for Olympics or tennis or theatre-related events but to me it is generally a vast wasteland of loud commercials and mostly boring shows and plots, though there may be an occasional good thing on there.
People have their likes and dislikes. It isn't where I like to spend my time. The internet can be quiet and that's one thing I like about it. You don't have a barrage of constant sound vying for your attention.
Well, I certainly don't watch TV.
teeeheeeheeeeheee
i don't fart either.
I always remember some snooty arty type saying to Rob Petrie on "The Dick van Dyke Show": "Oh, I don't own a television machine."
I used to work with a woman who managed to bring up her avoidance of TV in every conversation. But she somehow managed to know waaaaaaay more about crap programming than I could ever hope to.

Exactly Reg-A woman I know NEVER fails to do the "I don't watch TELEVISION" sneer but she watches every second of "I'm a Celebrity" on line. I don't get it.
It's classier to watch it online, Joe.

That's funny.
People have tried to talk about TV shows to me at work until they realize I have no idea what they are talking about and then they finally give up.
What's even odder is that some of them then have a really hard time finding something to make conversation about. I guess they only watch TV.
If ya don't fart then it's your burps that smell like crap!
I am a PROUD TV watcher!
i don't belch either. perioduically throughout the day i exude an aura of rose petals.
I find it ridiculous too, but it's true. They always brag and act superior, yet never seem better read or more aware of anything else. So what are they doing with their time? I guess reading romance novels and surfing the internet for porn?
Yeah, from a can marked Glade to cover up the non flatulence.

Most people do like to watch TV. My mother has the thing going nonstop almost when I am at her house. If it makes her happy I want her to have it. she also leaves the radio on all night to "listen to" while she sleeps.
The constant noise of TV just fatigues me because I can't block the sound out. To some people constant sound is pleasant, even soothing.
People are different.
My 7th grade math teacher doesn't even have a TV & it turned out that he was a pedophile. Coincidence? I think not!

Joe: brilliant.
Nom, you've sort of set it up, though, as if watching television can only mean that it's tuned to crap and on 24 hours a day.
And even though you don't feel you brag about being a non-watcher, you did instantly go on to put down the entire medium. Doesn't that sort of imply the same thing?

Haha! Well, so much for your 7th grade math teacher, whom I hope is in jail.
I'm not the only person on this website who doesn't have a TV or watch it, though I may be the only one to bother to tell you why I don't. I'm not the only theatre-loving person who doesn't either, but let them speak for themselves if they bother to discuss the matter.
I have only watched one TV show online so far, and it was the same one my neighbor recorded for me. And I have watched a few online boobtube clips, one to hear Adam Lambert sing and one to hear Aaron Tveit sing, a few other theatre-related ones like on BWW. The nice thing is you can choose the timing of when and what you watch.
If TV is fun for you, enjoy it. It makes a living for a lot of people.
Some people think it's for old farts. Just sayin'.
I thought watching The Hills made me hip....

Nom, after reading your posts, I've come to wonder why I ever had the idea that people bragged about not watching TV as a way to subtly trumpet their intellectual superiority.
I have no idea what happened to him. It was few a months ago & he has disappeared. I always knew there was something off about him. He walked like a robot with no fluid motion at all, he kept a picture of his "Fiance" on his desk after she "dumped" him, a kid invited him to her birthday party as a joke & he showed up.
A little fun trivia: Do you know how the ship on Gilligan's Island got its name?
After the Skipper's wiener?
No, but that is how the phrase "little buddy" first got introduced into the show.
The nice thing is you can choose the timing of when and what you watch.
We sort of solved that problem with VCRs in the mid-80s. There is a new thing called a DVR, which is one of the greatest achievements in the history of mankind. With the advent of cable and recording devices, the "I hate commercials" or "there's nothing but crap on TV" arguments are positively archaic.

I believe it was a shout out to Newton Minnow who called TV a "Vast wasteland."
