Breast Feeding in public. Appropriate or Not?

Rodney - I would actually think most posters on this board are a lot less blinded by puritanical judgement than many others in this country.

Crazy4Matt - Gross? The passing of life nourishment from mother to child is gross? I just can't see how that's seen in that light.

" if you had someone sucking on your nipple for 3 hours a day over the course of a couple of years"

that statement made me a little.... happy.

I still remember the episode of Friends where they were talking about it. "That is juice squeezed from a person!"

I would say do it discretely. Unfortunately many don't have much of an "innocent" mind nowadays, and demean the nature of the act itself. But I would respect myself, my body, and as well as others and do it privately. Also, I don't think there is a problem with how old a child should be...with so much unhealthy and manufactured food out there, every mother should try to protect their children for as long as they can.

a very close friend of mine breastfed her son until he was five years old. he is 22 now and has vivid memories of his mother feeding him. i have mixed feelings about this. ultimately, it is really none of my business and her son is perfectly normal. i don't think i would choose to brestfeed past a year, but to each her own. as a side note, my friend was living on a farm in kenya at the time so there was a different cultural expectation.

The baby has to eat. Unfortunately this same baby can't go to a Mc Donald's and get a Happy Meal! Breasts are for nourishment of a baby. But because of our uptight society and horny men, women have to hide them. Too bad G-d didn't make milk come out of a woman's elbow. We wouldn't have the controversy.

It doesn't bother me except when the woman doesn't at least try to cover up. I'm all for breastfeeding, but I don't need to see your ta-tas, thank you very much.

I don't mind if a woman shows me her ta-ta's.

I just mind when she shows them but is not willing to share them.

I subscribe to the anywhere with discretion theory. I've never been a big fan of in-your-face tactics as they tend to alienate rather than educate. But gross, never.

As far as children being breastfed until they are 3 or 4, it is unnecessary in THIS culture...and is usually more about the needs of the mother than the child.

We live in a twisted society in America that takes the natural process of feeding an infant and turns it into a side show in some cases. Discretion and good judgement are called for by the mom and those around her, but this is a normal function that normal people should respesct and appreciate. It's also quite heartwarming when the proud papa is supportive too. Not to mention breastfeeding is healthier for mom and baby and leaves you with a pair of great hooters! :)

Speaking from experience, I nursed both my boys for their first year. They were the chunkiest, healthiest babies around. It's a very special bonding between mother and child that I highly recommend to all you young future moms. Breast is Best!

Like I said before, I'm not against breast feeding, I just think in our society where it's inappropriate for nipples to be out in broad daylight, it's inappropriate to breat feed without covering up.

i'd agree that an effort should be made to do it somewhat discreetly, just out of courtesy to those uncomfortable with it. i wouldn't use the term "inappropriate" if it's a public place, but no need to draw extra attention by doing it, say, at the altar during your wedding.

I once went to a church where the youth minister sat in the front row of church nursing her baby...and NOT discretely. In the big picture, it was counter-productive to her purposes.

if men could take over a portion or all of the breat feeding duties for a baby, imagine how that would affect the man's already-fuzzy sexuality. assuming that the sexual attraction to breasts is tied at some level to their association with comfort and sustenance.

That's an interesting point.

I for one am OBSESSED with breasts and I've described this obsession in detail in other threads.

Is that because I was NOT breast fed? Am I just trying to make up for being "deprived" as an infant?

Actually, aside from the fact that Rodney just started this thread so he could talk about his favorite part of the anatomy, he raises a very good question. I work for immigration at the airport, and a lot of women from less-developed countries (or, one could argue, countries where mammaries are just mammaries and not a sexual object) have no qualms having a boob hang out and a kid sucking on it while they're answering questions that will or will not let them into the country!

I think as a general rule of thumb, subtly is key, however there are certain places where breast feeding is just inappropriate and/or distracting. (i.e. fine dining, the theatre - where babies shouldn't be anyway, a classroom, etc.)

BTW - a 5 year old still getting breastfed??? WTF???

how embarrassed would you be if it was your first day of kindergarten, snack rolls around, Fruit Roll-Ups get passed out, and in walks Mom right on time for a little boobie session in front of the class. and how much worse would it be if she were to do the same thing at your senior prom? just a plausible rhetorical, lest this thread be labeled "ridiculous" again. ridiculous, indeed!
