Breastfeeding in public...

I was just reading that this past week there was a huge demonstration here in Manhattan regarding a comment Barbara Walters made on "The View". She said that she was uncomfortable sitting next to a woman on a plane who was breastfeeding her baby.

As a father and as a husband, I really have to say that I find breastfeeding in public to be disgusting. My wife never did it when our son was of the age. It is not a pretty sight when you are sitting in a restaurant and watching a woman breastfeeding 10 yards away from you. It really isn;t something that should be done in public.

How do you feel about this issue?

re: Breastfeeding in public...

It's a natural part of life. I do not believe it to be inherently disgusting or tacky--I think our society is too puritan and is conditioned to think that something as beautiful and pure as a mother feeding her child is dirty and x rated.

I think it's perfectly fine, as long as the mother shows at least a little discretion, which is normally the case. In fact, I think it's lovely!

re: Breastfeeding in public...

I don't think it's "dirty" or "x-rated," but I agree with mef, in most cases. I guess it depends on the circumstances...

It depends - some women are so discreet you can't even tell. I am also uncomfortable if it's overt and a lot of breast is showing...that's just unnecessary.

re: Breastfeeding in public...

What I don't understand a lot of the time is why can't a woman pump beforehand and feed the baby through a bottle? That is what my wife always did.

Perhaps they don't feel the same bond with the baby that way, melissa errico fan. But I suppose it's different for everybody.

If I'm seeing major cleavage on a sidewalk -- I'm not too happy with it, but it's certainly not disgusting, as it is a natural part of life.

re: Breastfeeding in public...

I can't resist this..."disgusting in public?" and just what do you do in a public situation (bus,in a park, on the beach, in a mall nowhere near a ladies room, etc), let your baby scream? Is that more attractive? 10-20 min. is a liftime for a hungry infant! Not to mention the old "let down" function (where your milk comes in as a your baby screams). Pumping your breasts is for long term abscenses from your baby. (ok too much info.)

Breastfeeding is one of the most natural functions of motherhood and a special time for a mother and child (and should be respected and even admired by the father). There are discreet and dignified ways to nurse a baby publically without calling attention to yourself.

People who look down on nursing a baby in public have some issues to overcome. This natural practice is common and totally accepted in many other countries.

re: Breastfeeding in public...

I don't know that I really have a particular opinion on the issue, since I tend to figure somewhere along the lines of "whatever floats your boat," but to the people who are upset over the opinion that is IS disgusting, maybe people are finding it such because there are just too many women who *aren't* being discreet about it. You all say that there are discreet ways to do it, but you're telling me that if someone whips out their entire breast and makes a big production of it, you're not going to be a bit put off by that?

And personally, I probably wouldn't either. But, our culture is sort of bred to turn away from things like that.

... this is also a really personal issue, especially in discussing the choice to do it or not. This thread is going to get weird.

re: Breastfeeding in public...

No one needs to "put on a boobie show" for sure! It just seems to me that people in general expose themselves for much less noble causes than feeding babies.

You have to be faced with this situation to see how people react. You'd be surprised. Some people just think it's crude and embarrasing regardless of how discreet a mother is.

Suggesting that a mother pump her milk to avoid a "nursing in public" situation is just stupid. You travel as a family for an outing, the milk comes along for the ride. Really, it shouldn't be a big deal.

re: Breastfeeding in public...

I'd be uncomfortable sitting next to Barbara Walters!Or, for that matter, next to any jerk who would make such a foolish comment...
If nursing is handled properly-that is, one's shirt is pulled UP- then the baby lays across and nothing is "showing". If you are offended by this then should we then assume that you are not a fan of plunging necklines or those tops made from little triangles? Would you be upset if a woman wearing a very revealing dress was seated 10 yards away from you in a restaurant? As for the idea of "pumping and bottle-feeding", the nipples are entirely different(like you didn't know!) and many infants can not handle the "confusion" that results. All of my children were nursed "in public" and no one ever said anything about it-in fact, it was done so discretely that poeple would often try to see the "little one" and wonder why the baby wouldn't turn and look at them!

re: Breastfeeding in public...

I was absolutely disgusted when the soprano who sits in front of me at choir practice was breast-feeding her son during practice. I mean, couldn't she have excused herself and gone to the ladies' room? The fact that her son is 27 years old made the situation even more horrific.

I mean, really, where's good taste?

re: Breastfeeding in public...

Is there a difference between breastfeeding in public and urinating in public or masturbating in public? They are all natural.

Should distinctions be made? If so, where?

dropping by to say ... well, breastfeeding can be done discreetly. I breast fed my kids during church services even, and it never bothered anyone.

re: Breastfeeding in public...

Oh my. Jose, I hope you were merely playing the provocateur with that comment. Breastfeeding is a baby's way of eating. We don't normally find eating to be something that needs to be done in private, unlike bodily elimination or sexual activity.

re: Breastfeeding in public...

An appropriate question, I believe.

The point is that everyone has different thresholds of behavior they personally consider to be appropriate, or not, when displayed in public.

There are some people who find other people's eating habits to be offensive and tasteless (pun intended).

There are also, I would venture to guess, some folks who would see no problem in public displays of bodily elimination or in mastering one's universe.

The question remains, where does society draw the line, and who actually draws it?

re: Breastfeeding in public...

I have no problem with it, but it helps to be considerate of the people around you. It's a beautiful thing, really - to compare it to urination and masturbation is absurd - anything baby-related is always wonderful! re: Breastfeeding in public...

re: Breastfeeding in public...

I also breast fed my kids, but I always practiced discretion and tried to gauge my practice based on what environment I was in. It would never have occurred to me to nurse a child while sitting at a table in a restaurant. Or in church, for that matter. I would have excused myself and gone somewhere a little more out of the way, even if it was still in a public area.

I believe in breastfeeding and support it wholeheartedly. But I don't see the need for being "in your face" about it. Nursing a baby publically in a showy manner is more about the mother making a point than it is about nutrition and bonding with the baby. I also question exactly whose needs are being met when a two, three, or god-help-me, four year old is still nursing. While that practice may make sense in some cultures, I have a hard time coming up with a good reason for it in ours.

I agree. In Africa, or other areas where clean water is often unavailable, it makes sense to breastfeed for four or five years. Not here though.

"Is there a difference between breastfeeding in public and urinating in public or masturbating in public?" -Jose

Is this a quz? Can I go first? ummmmm...Yes, even a baby know's the difference.

Jose, I say go out right now and practice those two latter "natural functions". Here's a quater to call someone from the slammer 'cause they're both illegal, you silly old fool.

And yes, flit, I agree, 2-3 yr.old's who attend pre-school have to be partial potty trained and off the boob...and so do most 27 yr. olds (which often proves more challanging!)

re: Breastfeeding in public...

Why should a mother feed her baby in the bathroom? Would YOU want to eat lunch in a bathroom?

Breastfeeding is THE healthiest way to feed a child. No, I'm not bashing mothers who don't breastfeed, but the fact is that the best food for a developing baby is breastmilk. In a culture where twelve-year-old girls can walk around in shorts with a half-inch inseam and halter tops cut down to the navel and not turn heads, why is it still so offensive for a woman to simply feed her child?

I am all for breastfeeding in public. If other people don't like it, they can look away.
