But doesn't BJD2 sound just like BJD1?
Bridget pondering over Colin or Hugh...Hugh and Colin disliking each other...Bridget getting into embarassing scrapes...Colin and Hugh bitch slap each other...Bridget picking Colin in the end...? Still, can't wait!

Posted: 11/5/04 at 11:38pmSo I take it that bit won't be in the movie. Or have they replaced him with someone else?

Posted: 11/5/04 at 11:41pmI remember hearing something about Colin being replaced with another British actor, but I can't recall who at the moment.

Posted: 11/5/04 at 11:42pmthey were initially pursuing george clooney, ut i don't know if that came to fruition. (wow, i've never used that word in my life.)

I believe they cut out the Colin Firth interview from the movie. I personally would've liked to see it stay in and have Colin Firth actually do it, but with different hair and clothes and such. Would've been funny.
I'd also be willing to bet that the Thai prison storyline is cut. I hear that there's a lot of deviation from the original book.

But the prison storyline is like, a 1/3 of the book! *stricken*
That's terrible!!

I had the chance to see BDJ2 at an early test screening about a month ago. it is WONDERFUL! and not just because i adore colin and there is a lot more of him than in the first one!
SPOILERS!!! DO NOT SCROLL DOWN IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW!!!
The Thai prison scene is definitley still in. they changed aspects of the vacation from the book, mostly to include more Hugh (he's in the book like...twice.) also, the colin firth interview is cut, but if you listen carefully, there is one reference to colin in a "wet white shirt," which made me literally squeal. if you want to know more details, PM me! but i think it's better if you're surprised!
END SPOILERS!

Posted: 11/6/04 at 11:13amEtheb I did not look at the spoiler part of your post because I want to be surprised. I'm so happy you thought it was as good as BJD. I consider the movie to be one of my all time favorites.

Posted: 11/8/04 at 6:31amIt makes me laugh when people say this movie sounds just like the first one. OF COURSE IT DOES! If they tried to deviate from the formula, you'd all be bitching that it wasn't the same. I saw it at the weekend and I really liked it. It's cute and it's funny, Renee is fantastic, so are Hugh and Colin. It's not groundbreaking or award winning or anything, but it's total fun.

I saw the movie about 2 weeks ago and I think people who enjoyed the first movie will like the second one.
Things have of course changed because Hugh Grant does have a large role in the movie and his character is virtually non existant in the book.
Also they carried some of the memorable jokes from the first movie over to the second one.
Her Parents are back and Jim Broadbent is such a scene stealer to me.
Overall, I enjoyed the movie and thought Renee was really good. It seems that all of the weight she gained went to her chest. :)

Posted: 11/8/04 at 10:31amJim Broadbent is in the movie for all of 3 seconds this time though. He has what like 2 lines? And why Celia Imrie even bothered showing up is beyond me.

Posted: 11/8/04 at 10:33amBut Jim Broadbent was wonderful in his 3 scenes. :)

Bumping this thread back up since I'm sure a few people (such as myself) will be catching it this weekend!
Also, I don't know if this is just in Canada, but are there significantly less US theatres showing it this weekend? I guess they didn't anticipate the one-week bump up. Some of our major theatres in Vancouver aren't showing the movie at all!

Posted: 11/13/04 at 6:06amThe reviews have been incredibly bad on both sides of the Atlantic. Most bizarre as it is no less funny or enjoyable than the first film. I hope it's a mahoosive smash, just to annoy all the stuffy critics.

Watched it last night. Packed theatre, natch.

Thoughts? Still sweet, still the luscious Colin First, still the caddish Hugh Grant With Fantastic JBF Hair...was fairly loyal in referencing parts of both the first and second book (i.e. Magda the Smug Married and The Jellyfish Bitch). I laughed out loud if a few bits (particularly during Colin and Hugh's infamous bitch fight).
The biggest problem I had with the movie was that it was so predictable - not in the sense of knowing how the story's going to end (we all know how the story's going to end), but in the sense that they reuse all the same gags over and over again. I think about 4 times in the movie, they put Bridget in a situation where she says the stupidest, most inappropriate things to Mark Darcy while he's with company. Also annoying was all of Renee's slapstick gags that serve absolutely no purpose in advancing the story or establishing character development. You know it's coming. You roll your eyes. Here we go again. I also have to say that the Thai prison bit was thankfully only about 10-15 arduous minutes, but at least a fair portion of the book is cut out.
The movie's worth seeing since it's, well, Bridget Jones, and likely it'll be a big hit even though the critics hated it. (I'd be curious to see what the per theatre $$ average is, since it's opened in such seemingly limited release in N.America and it won't open in wide release until next weekend - so I'm sure the opening weekend tally will be quite weak.) It's certainly sillier than the first one, but not horrible by any means.
