Broadway for skinny people only?

I'm a big boy. I'm not the picture of female attraction. I do my school's/and summer theatre shows and have had some pretty decent roles- Smokey in Damn Yankees, Mordcha in Fiddler On The Roof and Major Holmes in Secret Garden. I've always gotten older type of roles to because I'm tall and chubby. Don't worry. I've had people make fun of me, but I keep going cause I want to prove them wrong and I do.

you're too young to worry about weight. you've got years to either develop love for whatever shape your in, or an eating disorder.---i know...i'm an overweight gay-man--- and soooo sexy...but these gays can be very tough. the next time someone tries to lock you in a closet, take your big, sexy self and bash the door down.

I know people will say "Don't listen to them." I don't think that's good advice because things people say can hurt your feelings.

Be proud of who you are and don't worry. You're not alone, I'm always cast as a crazy old lady because I'm tall and a little chunky.

yea i no wut you mean im 14 years old too and im not the skinnest person ever and everyone keeps telling me im never going to get any roles and i have no chance but if you really like to sing like i do then you should still work at it because there are a lot of roles for not so skinny people and maybe you just havent found that right show yet but theres also probably directors that cast people that are really different from what the original character looks like but dont lose weight just because other girls are making fun of you, only do it for yourself when i was in 5th grade i was really overweight so i went on weight watchers and i did it together with my mom and lost some weight and it made me feel a little better you can try and lose more weight if you want but dont try to do it to prove it to someone only do it to make yourself feel better
so no i dont think broadway is just for skinny people i want to be on broadway even if i start gaining weight or anything im still gonna try it and a lot of people will probablly look beyond looks and look for the true talent.

I find myself coming back to this thread again and again. I am an extremely obese mutha****a. Coupled with the fact that I look like a caveman, I, too, have problems getting cast in things.

But my total lack of acting/singing talent is also getting in the way.

I'm in the same situation as you, well, I don't have any b*tches terrorizing me, but I'm a bit bigger and taller (5'7")(myspace.com/dramahoap). I also look a lot older than my age (you do not look 14 at all, but I look 16-17 even though thats about 4 years older than I am) I always use my body shape and how old I look to my advantage. I'm always given the role of the mother or older sister, but I'm always getting fabulous character roles! I stay the size that I am with intention, I could lose 30 pounds, but I'd rather not because I would look like all of the girls I'm competing with. Now, when I get to college, I'll likely lose the weight because Broadway and working professionally is a whole different ball game.

I say use it to your advantage and stay healthy!

I'm glad the thing coming out of this thread is "your not alone"
Because I absolutely can't stand it this year, I'm a junior & the musical cast went up.
And what do you know, most of the roles were filled up with tiny twitchy clicky cutesy soprano sohpmores and freshmen with little to no stage presence who can let off incredibly dumb and hurtful vibes.
Plus because my night italian class is running longer into the 1st month of rehersal, I have been ensembled, again. But I'm the vase, yay me.
I mean, it's hurtful feeling so much bigger & shaped differently than the others and never getting the acknowlement for your talents that you feel you deserve.
and never knowing where you stand in the theatre business, or if you're any good at all.
I just wish they would stop casting me in the drama shows and kicking me in the face come musical time.
It's very upsetting.

Depends on the roles you want to play. Not gonna lie, you won't get cast as the engenue if you are overweight. I'm not saying you are - I can't see your pics, it says your profile was deleted or something. But I don't anticipate they are going to start casting anybody but thin, very in shape girls as lead women. Character roles, you should have no problem.

From JRB's The Last Five Years:

"I'm climbing uphill, Daddy, climbing uphill.
I'm up every morning at 6,
and standing in line with 200 girls who are younger and thinner than me,
who have already been to the gym..."

If I only had the time, what I would write for your delight...

You're not fat - although your grammar needs help. LOL

Read this GREAT book! Til the Fat Girl Sings: From an Overweight Nobody to a Broadway Somebody-A Memoir by Sharon Wheatley.

Sharon was in Les Mis, Cats and now Avenue Q. Funny, honest look at the Broadway body image. No matter what your size (or sex)you will love it!

There is a book called BODY OUTLAWS that you all should read! It is a collection of great stories that offers a lot of insight on these particular issues.

those girls are just jealous! dont let em bring you down! anyway...dont lose weight to be in theater...lose weight to be as healthy and comfortable as you can be! the truth is that in show business NO MATTER WHAT YOU LOOK LIKE you are SOMETIMES gonna be judged by how you look...its not just weight its bone structure, hair, eyes, height, everything....and we cant be both short and tall...ugly and pretty...dainty and sexy...curvy and waifish anyway....you can only be you. and though you may lose a job cuz "u dont have the look they had in mind" one day ur lovely figure and face will HELP you win a job! so love who you are!
ps sara ramirez is a great example and role model

It's true, you can only be you. If you have the sufficient talent, there IS a role out there for you, regardless of your looks. You may never be the ingenue (and hey, I won't be, either), but you will find your niche. If you feel you need to lose weight, don't do it for this reason. Do it for yourself.

And you don't look overweight at all to me.

I am an aging actor in NYC.....always been short and "portly"....however I can sing, hoof and act.......been in 19 broadway shows (7 musicals) and many national tours.......if you want to be skinny then get used to a life in the ensemble.....however that isn't even true anymore since broadway ensembles are smaller, they now utilze character actors that can sing and move well.....if you want to be skinny be a rockette

Everything in this business is based on looks, not just talent. But that doesn't mean you have to be skinny. There are tons of parts that can only be played by bigger people.
