Regarding Walter Winchell and his anti-Communist activities: he was the basis for the lead character in SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS.
The show wasn't a pledge-a-thon in NY, either.
Just a short break between 'episodes'.
Loved it!
Staunch supporter of PBS, here!
Absolutely terrific
I can't wait for Parts 2 and 3
and that was Doris Eaton Travis by the way who was the understudy for Marilyn Miller
She just turned 100 this year
Are you sure the making of Wicked can fill a whole ten minutes?

The unfortunate thing is that they will probably interrupt the show every fifteen minutes to beg for money. That's what PBS always does when they have something good on.
They didn't last night, Rodney. It was a pleasure to watch!

I guess it depends on your local PBS channel.
Triva Time! Who testified to Congress and convinced them to give the original grant that created the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and in turn, PBS?
It's someone you've all heard of.

I was also expecting the pledge-a-thon, but it was not in Miami either! It is a wonderful program- can't wait for tonight's show!
Excellent program, but I'm going to have to order the DVD. I was trying to watch this, the baseball game and yes, Manhunt on Bravo.
OMG, the moment where Bert Williams was left out of the Equity strikes, I teared up.
Bert Williams' "signature" song, "Nobody," was the basis for the "Mr. Cellophane" number in CHICAGO.
i was all prepared for my 'pledge potty break', but they didn't do one. Amazing!
CRAP!! I FORGOT TO TAPE THIS SHOW!!
Anyone know if Part 1 will be repeated? I don't have the dough to shell out for the DVDs.
I'm sure it will be repeated. Check out the PBS website. Good luck.
The entire three-part series is being rebroadcast on Saturday, Oct. 23 beginning at 4PM EST with 20 minute (pledge?) breaks in-between each part. It will then be repeated again in it's entirity beginning at 11PM EST Saturday night.
Thank you! That has made my day.
"Nobody" was also used in the musical TINTYPES.
The glorious Lynne Thigpen performed it originally.
Also, one major reason to get the dvd is for the bonus material. You get the entirety of the bench scene between John Raitt and Jan Clayton. You cannot ask for anything more!
I'm mad because I have rehearsal two out of three of the nights so I have to miss some of it. I have lots of it taped but I missed Showboat.
I will be eternally pissed if I miss Cabaret.

Will there be a new thread for the show tonight? Mary? Hmmmmm?
What's wrong with this one?
Yeah B.B., what's wrong with this one? And who are you calling Mary???
Gov, once it hits WEST SIDE STORY tomorrow night, Sondheim will start talking a lot more. He doesn't really talk about his own shows (except for a few times), it is mostly Hal Prince. Just to give you a heads up.
Nothing wrong with Hal Prince. :)
Nothing at all
According to TV GUIDE, tonight Sondheim will be discussing PORGY AND BESS.
