All I have to say is "duh".
"The fact is this: that `Brokeback Mountain' has helped to change the world. And it is such a privilege and honor to have joined you, and all the people all over the world, who struggle for compassion and equality."
I don't agree with that though.

Please note that the quotation is from Ang Lee, who attended the ceremony. Recently in Taiwan, lawmakers passed a motion to include gays and lesbians in a bill to protect spousal abuse, and there are other plans to give gay and lesbian couples equal benefits and protection under the law. The Taiwanese lawmakers have explicitly said that Lee's BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN influenced their thinking. I say that's pretty remarkable.

The other nominees were...
Capote
The Family Stone
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Rent
Although I'd consider Capote and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang to be great films, I can't say that Brokeback had any serious competition for this award. Rightfully so, IMHO.
