Once is a gorgeous film and I'm was very happy to see that it won the award, even after talks of its possible disqualification.
If you haven't seen this film, I highly recommend it.

"Why was ONCE almost disqualified?"
There was an issue about whether or not the song was really written for the film because versions of it had been released prior to the release of the film.
Specific Details Here.

Oh, but Once was amazing, though!
I was happy when Jon let Marketa come back out and make her speech.

Posted: 2/25/08 at 12:20amI LOVED when Jon brought Marketa out to talk. I mean, I would have regardless because I'm an unabashed Once groupie, but it was a heartfelt, adorable speech that was the highlight of my night.

I thought that was incredibly classy of Stewart to bring her back on. I was yelling at the TV when they cut her off!
Her speech was beautiful, as is "Falling Slowly" and the other songs she collaborated on for "Once". I adore Alan Menken, but this award belonged to them.

I think he has 18 nominations.
He won two Oscars each for THE LITTLE MERMAID, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, ALADDIN and POCAHONTAS. Best Song and Best Score for each film.

I thought the performance for "Falling Slowly" was boring. Maybe it works better in context, I dunno, since I haven't seen the movie.
But it was better than that gospel number.
(ETA: I was raised in an A Capella church, so I've never liked gospel.)

Posted: 2/25/08 at 3:10amIn context or not, "Falling Slowly" is a beautiful song in numerous ways. Gorgeous and moving and haunting. Their performance was an all-time highlight. Their win and speeches were beyond words.

Posted: 2/25/08 at 3:15amThe "Falling Slowly" performance was clearly meant to echo the context of the first time it's heard in the movie, when the two main characters sing it in a music shop, and rightly so. It was one of the most electrifying and haunting moments I can ever remember seeing in a movie theater. That said, it didn't translate QUITE as well to that enormous stage, although their performance was still wonderful. I totally agree with Taz on the sincerity that was so evident. (The fact that they're adorably together in real life and that he clearly couldn't take his eyes off her while onstage definitely helped.)
