And why not? I'd rather see what Tim Burton and Johnny Depp come up with than just about any other actor/director collaboration out there.

Yeah, I'm a bit disappointed in the rather drab choice of subject matter, but who knows. I'll wait to see the film.

I really don't understand why they assume we want to see Johnny Depp in every Burton film. At this point, it's just turning me off Burton films altogether. This is worse than Scorsesi and DiCaprio.

Johnny Depp's acting is almost as tired as Tim Burton's films.

Sorry, folks I just don't see it. I don't see Depp's work as being even remotely tired. His work continues to amuse and surprise me. I'll take Depp over that Philip Seymour Hoffman creature any day.

I'd love to see Johnny Depp in a present-times set film, I'd also love to see him work with a different director.

Roscoe - I agree, but it doesn't mean I want to see Depp in every Tim Burton film. It does remind me of repertory theatre, which is why I stop attending many repertory theatres. As versatile as Depp is, Burton is less so. So essentially, we're just getting more of the same with each additional film collaboration. And there are plenty of other actors I would love to see starring in a Burton film for a change. Lord, I've even take DiCaprio or Hanks at this point, and I thought I would never want to see them again in anything.

I haven't reached the total saturation on Depp/Burton that others have. Yeah, not all of Burton's films are masterworks (PLANET OF THE APES I have a hard time forgiving) but I don't see how he's really repeated himself. C'est la vie, opinions will differ.

It's not that Burton repeats himself so much, as he achieves a stylistic rut. I actually like Planet of the Apes because it is such a departure from his other films. But I definitely see similarities in many of his films. Sweeney Todd reminded me of Sleepy Hollow, all the way down to Ricci's huge forhead and blonde locks. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was reminiscent of Edward Scissorhands. And the only surprising thing about Big Fish was that there was almost no darkness in the story, but as for everything else, textbook Burton. Of the Burton/Depp collaboration, I think they probably should have stopped after Ed Wood, which was the peak of their work together.

Yeah, point taken up to a point, I guess. I'd forgotten about BIG FISH, which is pretty easy to do. For me his best films are the ones that are his most typical. That BIG FISH thing, MARS ATTACKS, the unfortunate PLANET OF THE APES are his weakest films and the furthest from being stereotypical "Burton" films, I'd say. His best work like BATMAN RETURNS, ED WOOD, EDWARD SCISSORHANDS and the magnificent SWEENEY TODD are squarely in that groove of his. Groove or rut, I'll still take Burton over most directors out there.
