Bush Renews Call for Federal Anti-Gay Amendment

(Nashville, Tennessee) President Bush called on Congress Tuesday to pick up the pace and pass a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage.

Addressing 11,000 delegates at the annual Southern Baptist Convention in Nashville, Bush praised the denomination for its strong "family values" and support for the amendment.

"Building a more compassionate society starts with preserving the source of compassion - the family," Bush told the convention.

"Strong families teach children to live moral lives and help us pass down the values that define a caring society. And Southern Baptists are practicing compassion by defending the family and the sacred institution of marriage. Because marriage is a sacred institution and the foundation of society, it should not be re-defined by local officials and activist judges. For the good of families, children, and society, I support a constitutional amendment to protect the institution of marriage."

A proposed amendment failed last year in Congress, but was reintroduced this year.

Bush also chastised Democrats for attempting to hold up Bush's judicial nominees.

"And for the good of our legal system, I will also continue to nominate federal judges who faithfully interpret the law and do not legislate from the bench," the President said.

"Every judicial nominee deserves an up or down vote on the floor of the United States Senate, and I thank you for your strong support of the fair-minded jurists I have named to the federal courts."

Bush also told the convention he wants legislation that would allow faith-based groups that receive federal money to be able to restrict workers to those only who adhere to the tenants of that faith. Such a proposal would allow groups to fire gays from jobs such as soup kitchens, HIV/AIDS outreach programs, or thrift stores that are run by churches.

"Because faith-based groups should never have to forfeit their religious liberty to get federal dollars - and that's an important concept -- we want your help, we want your love, but at the same time, you do not have to forget the mission of faith or ignore the mission of faith that calls you to action in the first place."
It was the fourth time the president has addressed the convention, which boasts more than 16-million members and more than 43-thousand churches.

The conservative Southern Baptists heavily supported the president in last year's election.

Among the motions to be discussed at this week's convention is one urging members to take their children out of schools deemed too tolerant of homosexuality. (story)

Should I even bother breaking this down? Or should everyone not in a fundamental Christian church just pack up and move into Canada?

Better yet, I think it's time for a new secession.

The whole situation is becoming frighteningly reminiscent of the Jim Crow laws...(hopefully the comparison doesn't offend anyone)...I believed in that whole generation too until Bush somehow got re-elected

So I was sitting in my cubicle today, and I realized, ever since I started working, every single day of my life has been worse than the day before it. So that means that every single day that you see me, that's on the worst day of my life.~Office Space

re: Bush Renews Call for Federal Anti-Gay Amendment I'm not even gay, you should see me when I get started on the lack of female presidents, its unimagineable to me that its not a bigger issue then its seems to be or at least not actively in the public's day to day conciousness

To think that the only gay-female-black president we've ever had was Jimmy Carter, ugh.

". . . this nonsense will backfire. There is a generation of voters that rise above this."

This is a battle Bush is almost sure to lose. He would have lost it the last time he talked about it, and now his political capital is at a lower level than ever, as the Bolton debacle is so clearly demonstrating. You know the tide is turning in your direction when the Supreme Court starts to take your side- Brown v. Board of Education came about 10 years before the Civil Rights Act. Lawrence v. Texas is a promising start.

"Building a more compassionate society starts with preserving the source of compassion - the family," Bush told the convention.

I would think that building a more compassionate society should start with preserving things like: tolerance, open-mindedness, and understanding. But of course he doesn't want to talk about that.

I was in a discussion with a mother the other day who said that she would consider taking her kids out of their current school if they were to employ openly gay teachers. It was like banging your head against a wall -- her answer to whatever argument I came up with was: "I don't know, I just feel uncomfortable with it." And finally she said, "Well, this is all hypothetical right now, so I'm not going to think about it." The encouraging thing was, her kids, who were present during the discussion, thought she was being narrow-minded, and told her so.

As the partner of a man who has been indentifiable as a gay man and taught elementary school for over thirty years, I can only say, "Hah!"

Apparently, she has something in common with the Supreme Court judge who has the same fear.

I just wanted to hear what she was afraid of, exactly, to see how it could be addressed. And she couldn't even articulate that.

And what I found even more frustrating was the whole "since it's not affecting me, I'm not going to think about it" attitude.

"since it's not affecting me, I'm not going to think about it"

Welcome to America, Honey. If the current 'powers that be' don't care about even what their children's life will be like, then selfishness has been raised to a worshipful level.

I've said it before and I'll say it again... it's time for the GLBT community and their allies to show our numbers... a march in Washington as a 'reminder' of our numbers would be a place to start.

I have to wonder about that. I'm not sure that they don't have an awareness of our 'numbers' - if only because of all our disposable income. What I get is that they simply don't care. No matter how many our numbers are, they're not the majority - and that's what elects them, and therefore what they care about.

I think it might bring awareness and maybe change the minds of some of those people that are closer to the middle, though. And being part of a big event like that would hopefully unite us and make us more active politically, take care of some of that 'it's does not affect me' attitude.

Bush is just pathetic. Nothing he's pushing is going well for him. SO, he pulls this one out in hopes that he can accomplish SOMETHING in his second term? Sick. And, I pray that it will backfire in all of these bigots' faces. I believe it will.

The real slap in the face is how he's twisting the meaning of the word, compassion. Needing to protect the center of compassion? Try heterosexual marriages, of which more than half end in divorce, in which more and more children are getting impregnated or catching infectious sexual diseases or doing dangerous drugs and failing in school...and also producing 100% of our nations homosexuals.
