Bush's Speech on Brown v Board...

Ironic how so much of what he is saying will be said about people like him years from now when gays are finally given equal rights in this country.

Politicians would be smart to stand up for gay rights and be remembered among those who did the right thing--not among the Strom Thurmonds of the world who promoted racism.

re: Bush's Speech on Brown v Board...

Don't forget the Al Gore Srs and the other Dixiecrats, or FDRs of the world...

Anyway, first of all, sexuality and race are two very different things. And last I checked we aren't seperating homosexuals and heterosexuals into different (except for the NYC one, but that is optional).

Second, I find it odd that people think the ammendment Bush supports would ever pass. He's only backing it because it makes him appear to be strong on the whole gay-marriage issue (pandering to the religious right) while making Kerry look like a flip-flop, not that Kerry needed much help anyway. It's all just politics, divide and conquer, you know the drill...

re: bush's speech on brown broads

I think his post speaks for itself--I'll let Namo have a whirl.

Except in saying that (if you had listened to his speech) many of the things Bush was saying could be said about present civil rights issues.

And don't be so quick to segregate sexuality and race--no need to belittle one group's struggles over the other. Hatred is hatred. Not having equal rights is not having equal rights.

re: bush's speech on brown broads

Look, before anything else, I just want to say that gay marriage is probably inevitable, and I seriously doubt Dubya is really trying to stand in the way of it. it just looks like politics to me.

And I still stand by the race and sexuality thing. They are diffirent things on some levels, and this marriage rights battle is going to be quite a bit different from the desegregation of schools battle.

On the hatred is hatred thing, you're right. Unfortunatly some people still hate blacks just like people, even after all these gay right laws, are going to continue to be hateful towards gays. It's a really sad affair, and that's why I support almost all civil rights issues involving gays and other minortities. The thing is I don't see a lot of merit in giving out liscences like this. There are big differences between gay couples and a straight couples and a lot of Americans just want to respect that.

re: bush's speech on brown broads

ok

1. I never said that gay marriage and segregation were the same thing. I just said that the rhetoric used in today's speech was ironically universal.

2. There are not differences between gay couples and straight couples. There are differences between couples who want a monogamous relationship/marriage and couples that want an open relationship. That is IT. No other difference of note. So, if you REALLY think this is a valid point, you best do some explaining.

well, there is that pesky ability to procreate without any scientific help that is an innately hetero characteristic, jrb.

re: bush's speech on brown broads

Yes there are: For one, gay couples can't have children naturally together. yes they can adopt, find a surrogate mother or fo to a sperm bank, which are all fine ways of gay couples to have famalies. There's nothing wrong with that, but striaght couples, beleive it or not, can actually accidently have children. That's right even a married couple can have a accident.

When comes down to it, it's true, gay couples aren't that different from striaght couples. Many of these people on both sides are in loving, healthy relationships, and sometimes have families to go along with it. The big difference I'm talking about is the way they go about making these families.

re: bush's speech on brown broads

LOL. And, of course, THAT is why straight people get married--not for love and companionship and government protection.

What about:

1. Straight couples who can't have children?
2. Straight couples who don't want children?
3. Gay couples who do/want to have children?

That argument is absolute bull****, and you know it.

How are your kids, papa?

re: bush's speech on brown broads

jrb, no, what's bull**** is saying that there are no differences when there is a huge one. i'm not saying that it's the only reason straight couples get married, but to say it's not a difference is the height of either stupidity or willful blindness. since i know you're not a moron, i'll suggest you take off the dark glasses.

And, what I was referring to was the issue of couples. Not families. Not procreation.

And, regardless, the point is--THAT is not a difference that matters in the gay marriage issue.

re: bush's speech on brown broads

right, and the overwhelming majority of straight couples can procreate without either scientific or surrogate assistance and gay or lesbian couples cannot categorically do that. to deny that this is a difference, is like arguing that water's not wet.

"and regardless the point is"?

the point seems to be whatever you want it to be whenever you want it to be that, jrb. think before you speak and you won't have to change your argument to defend yourself.

re: bush's speech on brown broads

Papa--I was merely clarifying what I was talking about--that I do not see any difference between the relationships in a gay or straight couple. Fine, you and Mrs. Mambo can have a baby the old fashioned way. That does not mean that you are different from Mr. and Mrs. Lambada, who had to adopt. Or, Mr. and Mrs. Salsa, who had to use in vitro. Or, Mr. and Mr. Waltz, who had to ask a friend to carry the baby.

THAT'S my point. That's what I was saying all along. I never had to change anything.

yes, it does, jrb. it absolutely does. by the very definition of the word different. read what you just wrote. if there was no difference, then they'd be having children the mambo way.

re: bush's speech on brown broads

MY POINT (I'll say it again--apparently, it hasn't gotten through your thick skull) is that there is no difference between the relationship between the two people, thus no difference to deny gay people a marriage license.

If you REALLY feel that I made an error in not including the family and children part into my argument, then fine--I made an error. There is a difference. My point is that difference is not worthy of denying gay couples the right to marry, which is the point that Dennis pissed me off about.

Are we on the same page finally?

I think I'll put that helmet on now....

jrb, I think you're missing the big picture. Heterosexual sex, as much as you might not want to admit, is for having children. True some couples have trouble and use other methods, but most can have children naturally. You don't need statistics, it's coommon sense.

re: bush's speech on brown broads

"[t]here is a difference."

as long as you're acknowledging that there is indeed a difference. even though your opening sentence goes against this...

i, of course, maintain that the word marriage has no place in civil law and would prefer that all unions be made civil unions with the attendant rights. a marriage is something that takes place in a church. if society wants to recognize all relationships as equal (and i do mean all), then have at it. leave marriage to the churches to argue about.

re: bush's speech on brown broads

OMG!!!!! You are RIDICULOUS!

Are you telling me that everytime you have sex with a woman, your intention is to make a baby?

LET ME REPEAT!:

1. Straight people who CAN NOT have a baby!
2. Straight people who DO NOT EVER WANT to have a baby!

WHY SHOULD THEY BE ALLOWED TO GET MARRIED UNDER YOUR LOGIC!?!?

I am just AMAZED that you REALLY think that is a practical argument!!!!

re: bush's speech on brown broads

I agree with you on that, papa. All unions should be legal in the U.S. Then, I will go to my church and have them bless me and my husband no matter what the church down the street thinks.

But, when I said no difference between the relationships--I was talking about the love, the companionship, and partnership--all the things you and Mrs. Mambo are experiencing now, not having kids.

re: bush's speech on brown broads

Here's the bottom line -- if you're not gay, you will never understand the pernicious sting of homophobia. Trying to find differences between gay sex and straight sex, or gay couples and straight couples, is specious and a waste of time.

JRB wasn't talking about that and he shouldn't have taken your silly bait. He was talking about discrimination and you guys are doing a great job at showing how our "allies" are fair-weather friends.

By the way, marriage is about BENEFITS. The government social-engineers the institution through policies and the tax code. You keep all your arguments about the superiority of straight couples, just give me and my partner the same benefits and shut the hell up.

re: bush's speech on brown broads

I think both your points have been covered

1. Those couples are in a minority, again most heterosexuals can have children.

2. The thing is they do anyway! Pills and condoms fail married couples too.

And, papa, I like that idea, why should the government be regulating marriage anyway?

EDIT: Since when did marriage laws have anything to do with love and companionship. It's just a legal contract between two people with social benefits.

"[a]re you telling me that everytime you have sex with a woman, your intention is to make a baby?"

well, not me personally, but there are many, many couples for whom this does hold true. and they're not complete loons. some of them are very nice people who just believe the way they do and don't try to force their views on anyone else.

re: bush's speech on brown broads

Ok, dennis, you think you can refute my point with a ridiculous answer. We are talking about why people get married. They do not get married to have children. If you really think that is true for all or most straight couples then you go ahead living in that dream world.

Thank you, Zola. I do NOT know why I fell for their bait.
