Buying a dress in Manhattan on a whim . . .

My sister is going to be arriving at JFK late Friday night, and has one day in Manhattan on Saturday. She has a dinner date with one of BWW’s finest at 5pm, and a premium ticket for WICKED at 8pm (her first Broadway show!) She’s decided she wants to go into the city early and buy a new dress for the evening.

SO, she’s looking for a rather streamlined, classical look – preferably with an exposed back – and wears a size 8-10. She would like to keep it under 200 dollars.

She’s going to have the car drop her off at the restaurant first, just so she knows where she needs to end up, and that’s about 1 ½ blocks off of Times Square. For those of you who might have ANY experience in this type of thing, are there any suggestions where she should head to try and accomplish her goal? Also keep in mind that she’s NEVER been in MYC, and needs to keep it at least manageable for her to get where she needs to be.

Think Cher in MOONSTRUCK deciding to enjoy her night at the opera, and that should give you a sense of the spirit with which this is being approached.

I'm tempted to respond with a quote from CALIFORNIA SUITE that says something like, "Well at least on me it would have hung properly." But the fact is, my sister is a very smashing dresser, and will no doubt be fetching - even if she has to go with a Hefty Bag.

I wish your sister good luck. For what it's worth, I've never failed to find anything I wanted at that big 'ol Macy's store at Herald Square. VERY easy to get to too.

Oooh, I LOVE me some Daffy's! I went to the one near Wall Street on my luncheon yesterday and bought the most FABULOUS Michael Kors suit for like, fourteen cents, practically.

That's the name of the store. My favorite is the one on 34th Street, across from Macy's, near Penn Station.
