I would also like to point out that the current tracy's have to wear fat suits because it is hard to find an actress that is actually overweight like tracy. Even Marissa had to be put on a diet to keep her big because she was losing so much weight from doing the show. And CCM must be doing something right because Broadway is just sprinkled with graduates from that school and the faculty is amazing and the performace areas are professional quality. Their blunt and realistic approach makes it easier for a graduate to succeed and this not just a statement it is a fact.

some of their recent graduates:
Ashley Brown takes over as Belle in Beauty and the Beast on Broadway next
month and Aaron Lazar takes over the lead in Adam Guettel's The Light in the
Piazza. Sharon Wheatley and Kelly Sawyer share the role of Kate Monster in
Avenue Q in Las Vegas while, also in Vegas, Richard Oberacker musical
directs the Cirque du Soleil show, KA. In New York Ben Magnuson is
rehearsing Anthony for the upcoming revival of Sweeney Todd, Jacqui Polk is
in rehearsals for Princesses and Jessica Boevers is getting ready to star in
In My Life. Continuing on Broadway are Shoshana Bean in Wicked, John
Wasiniak in Phantom of the Opera, Sara Gettelfinger in Dirty Rotten
Scoundrels, Justin Patterson in All Shook Up, Julie Tolivar and Kearran
Giovanni in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and many others. Around the country,
Angela Gaylor is slated to play Cinderella at the Paper Mill Playhouse,
Edwin Henry is in Purlie at the Pasadena Playhouse, Matt Bogart is in Cat on
a Hot Tin Roof in North Carolina and Brian Sears is playing Barnaby in
Hello, Dolly! in Kansas City. And the list goes on . . . .

Being of a more solid build, doesn't mean you're not going to get work, nor does it mean that you're out of shape. If someone's body type is naturally curveous, meaning you have boobs and hips and the like, I don't think you're nesscarily going to be automatically cast in a character role. I have seen many actresses on Broadway in lead roles (other than Tracy). What qualifies as having to lose a few pounds ? I am a curvy woman and I know I would NOT look right at all if I were a size 4. Does that mean I should give up acting ? To name a few people, Natalie Joy Johnson (BARE) isn't a stick. Neither is Tracy Jai Edwards (GATP the musical and former Amber in HS). Being curvy is different from being overweight.

I think that for a professional school, the pamphlet came off as very condesceding. Regardless of how many of their graduates are on Broadway, I'd think you'd want to go to a place where you would feel comfortable without having to feel you need to live up to a certain image, even if that's not the case.

I think that you just need to present yourself in the best way you can. I don't think it matters the size of a person it matters how it will work for them. For example I'm barely 5 feet tall and I used to be overweight...I mean the only part I would have gotten was Tracy. Because I am short and petite and I want to have other roles open to me I lost about 35lbs. I think that was best for me because now I will have so many more roles open to me.

So it really is about doing what's best for you and your image. Because like it or not in this business you are basically a "product" and you need to better yourself so that you can expand your options. And this does not by any means, mean that everyone has to be "skinny" or "thin". But for me I know that I will benefit from it. And in fact I already have, getting parts that I wouldn't have before when I was overweight.

Alot of you are arguing against things that "withoutlove" said but I think that she is jsut stating the facts. It's the truth...and yeah it sucks and yeah it's not fair and none of us like it. But it was society that made it this way for all of us and we have no other choice but to except it. And if you can't except it I'd say get the hell out of this business. Like it or not how you look is one of the biggest factors on what roles you will be casted in and that's not going to change.

I agree that this is common in this business and like it or not, that's the way it is. I also think, though, that you need to decide if you are willing to change just to fit a preconcieved notion that someone else has. Meaning to say, that if you bust your butt to physically alter yourself, there is still no way to possibly know what someone wants and being a physical ideal won't change the fact that you just don't fit the concept the director saw in his/her head.

Yes, this is a business in which physical appearance holds alot of importance. I also think being comfortable with yourself does as well. A lack of confidence isn't going to change, even if you lose a 100 lbs. You may feel better about yourself, you may be opening yourself up to more roles, but I personally believe that if you didn't feel comfortable in your own skin before then you still won't. IMO.

This is a great dicussion because I think most everyone involved is approaching it, differences and all, in a really mature fashion. :)

I'm on the other side of the casting table. I know. I see. Remember, kids, You only get ONE chance to make a first impression. I have seen greasy hair, sloppy clothes, etc. If you don't have the greatest voice ever, believe me, it is hard to look past the appearance. Face it, if you want to be in this biz, there are a few concessions you have to make. Also, I know CCM very, very well, go there regularly to review their work, know the faculty, many of the students and their families. I can tell you, it is the best. Whether you want to believe it or not, it is rated No. 1 for a reason, period.

I'm not talking about not making a good first impression, mommy3. I know that one would NEVER show up to an audition not looking their best; neatly dressed, clean hair, etc, I'm just saying that a person may want to think about how willing they are to audition for something when a casting director/agent/etc, tells the person (who has a specific body type) that they need to lose 50lbs and get down to a size 2. Something that wouldn't be healthy for them. Regardless of how that's how this business works, I don't think it's always necesscary to complete alter yourself to make it. Yes, eat right, exercise, take care of yourself, but don't ty to be someone you aren't. I'd think people would see right through a facade like that.

I also know casting people and a lot of them have stated that they're looking for more people of ALL shapes and sizes.
