Oh My God......that looks crazy. I hope they keep that part from the book when the squirrels try to crack open Veruca's skull but give up when they realize it's empty.
I can't wait--I think it could be divine!
"This reminds me of the same type of humour as the recent CAT IN THE HAT with Mike Myers."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
That's EXACTLY what I thought too. I saw Cat in the hat a few weeks ago and once you see it you understand why it bombed. This looks the same.
Was it just me or did Johnny Depp's makeup job remind you of Michael Jackson?

Christopher Lee is playing Willy Wonka's father. I don't remember Wonka having a father. Sort of takes away some of the mystery of the character.

I FINALLY FIGURED IT OUT!!!!
It's been bugging me as to who Depp reminded me of in this movie.
He looks like Velma from Scooby Doo (especially the 70's cartoon).
Personally, I think it looks awesome and probably will be a fun movie. I also thought the 70's version was dreadful - especially the sappy first half of the picture.
Early "teasers" are no indication of what the final result will be. But I have faith in Depp and Burton. And the original never appealed to me anyway. So they'll be no love lost for me.
My problem is that one of Burton's marketing strategies seems to be saying, "This is the film that the original would have been if it were good." He is not a fan of the Gene Wilder version and is open about that... but, considering that the Gene Wilder version is so beloved, is it really wise to go around saying that his will easily trump it? I don't think so. Fans of the original film are either disenchanted by news of this incarnation or looking forward to experiencing a new take on the material; I doubt there are comparably many people who sincerely believe that Burton will do a "better" job than Mel Stuart.
Though "Willy Wonka..." is not entirely faithful to its source, I have to say that the screenplay is intelligent and witty, and it at least has a good handle on the dark Roald Dahl sensibility, despite Dahl and Dahl's widow's dislike of the movie. I was a huge fan of the Tim Burton-produced "James and the Giant Peach" which I know did please the Dahl widow, and my sense is that Burton would not create a film that would violate her faith in him, or stray too far from its source. But the trailer is indeed a little reminiscent of "Cat in the Hat" style frenzy and Hollywood bloat. I'm a little unsettled by it, but I am going to keep the faith.
I think the point Burton was making is that the orriginal movie was NOWHERE CLOSE to being near the book, where his is.

"which I know did please the Dahl widow"
Sounds so Dickensian.
oh my god. oh my god. oh my god. oh my god.
This movie needs to be out right now. I don't think I have enough drugs to experiance this movie on. If I ever try heroin it will be this movie's fault. oh my god.
Oh, Gotham... I was born in the wrong era. And the wrong country.
Here's some unnerving information from the trivia section for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory on IMDB.com
"Screenwriter John August had never even seen Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971) when asked by Tim Burton to write the script. After finishing the screenplay, he finally watched the 1971 version, only to be surprised at how much darker the "family film" was to his own."

But the difference between having such elaborate production values for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and having them for The Cat in the Hat whould be obvious- the latter is a tiny Dr. Seuss book hardly suited to becoming a feature-length film. The former is a chapter book that mostly takes place in a bizarre and amazing factory. It's not the same.

And I thought I'd never have to break this out again after I left the Plymouth:
WHAT THE HELL DID I JUST WATCH???
...seriously.
If they wanted Jim Carey to do the movie, why didn't they just have Jim Carey do the movie?
Also, what was with those teeth?
Ridiculous.
EDIT:

WHAT THE HELL DID I JUST WATCH???
Grade-A crack, my friend.
If they wanted Jim Carey to do the movie, why didn't they just have Jim Carey do the movie?
He was busy with A Series of Unfortunate Events. And besides, Johnny Depp is Tim Burton's muse.
Also, what was with those teeth?
He was going for that stylish denture look.

wonderfully creepy.
WOW that was a 30-second acid trip!!! Unbelieveable. To be honest, I love the Gene Wilder version so much, I don't know if I can stomach what I just saw. I ADORE Johnny, but honestly, that hair...Willy Wonka isn't supposed to be so...flamboyent?
And to whoever mentioned Charlies dad: In the novel, Charlie DOES have both parents alive. I do love the book, so maybe i'll have tsee this movie just to compare. But wow, that was so trippy.

How come you don't see any oompa-loompas in the commercial?
Do you think it will be Charlie Bucket (it's pronounced Boo-kay)?
"And to whoever mentioned Charlies dad"
I mentioned Wonka's dad. Christopher Lee is billed as Wonka's father. When did Wonka ever have a father?

No, Goth mentioned Willy Wonka's dad. Which I find a bit odd, myself.
Everybody has a daddy. Some daddies are test tubes, some are drunks, and some are nobel prize winning physicists.
That Johnny Depp is a pretty looking human being though.
I'll probably see it. More to see the looks of shock on the other audience members. I'll probably go to a 6 or 7pm show, just to get the right group.
I think the band you briefly see are Oompa Loompas. Danny Elfman's voicing them, so they're definitely in the film.

The reason I bring up the father is that the whole point of the Golden Ticket contest is because Wonka is lonely and wants someone to train to take over the running of the factory.
Ok, Ok. I'll wait until I see the movie before I ask any more questions.
My God thats freaky!! Johnny looks really strange. I love how he crashes into the camera at the end and his "eww"
