I know Kringas. But you know how theater, film, music could be. It makes people really really emotional because when they get to us, they REALLY get to us and we all feel emotionally vested in it.

I felt the same way for Lost in Translation (and an American Splendor snub), Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon...and even though I wasn't old enough to follow it at the time, I'm pissed that Sense and Sensibility was snubbed for director nomination and lost to Braveheart.

Hollywood's rampant racism? It's inability to accept the fact that they don't want to admit to themselves that they are all that racist?

See, all its merits aside, I think that could be what pushed Crash to victory here. The Academy has been taken to task over and over and over again for being racist and has been radically adressing this over the last few years. I've said it before that it's the only reason Halle Berry won an Oscar. I think (deservedly) awarding Crash the Best Picture Oscar as well as Hard Out Here For A Pimp getting best song was the Academy trying to prove they weren't racist AND that they were you know, hip.

To tell you the truth popcultureboy, I feel that way too. I mean I know there are tons of people who truly thought Crash was the best picture of the year, but I also feel that it was also a message from some to show the world how unracist they are.

And some of us just thought it was the better film.

I ask this in all honesty, Kringas: did you think Crash was the best film of the year?
Did you think it deserved Best Picture over the nominees this year?
Personally, I placed it last among the nominees and wouldn't have nominated it at all.
I'm just curious what you really did think of Crash or if it was just a better than Brokeback thing.

No, I thought Jesus is Magic was better than both. I don't think Crash was the best film of the year, but I do think it was a better film that Brokeback, which is what I've said all along.

Well, I realise you didn't ask ME, CeeCee, but I think Crash was far more deserving of a nomination than Munich or Capote. And I'm not annoyed or upset that it won. I thought it was a brilliant film and while politics played a part in its win, I don't think it was the entire reason. Same as if Brokeback would have won.

Kringas, I'm not denying that a lot of people felt it was a greater film than the other 4 nominated. :)

I am curious about that, Poppy. But, out of the nominees, was Crash the film you thought deserved it?
I don't want to rank them, but I would have put Brokeback at no. 1 followed by Good Night and Good Luck.
Obviously, I tanked on my choices.

I live in SoCal - Born and raised here. I think race is everywhere and nowhere here under the surface, ready to explode. And truth be told it is as much about economics as it is about race.

Whether it is Whites who feel threatened by the emerging Latino majority, whether it is Blacks who Resent the Latinos for taking jobs that once predominately belongs to the Black Community, whether it the perception of how Persian immigrants after the Shah fell never assimilated into the community, except to demand every benefit from the system they could . . . all of it is going on at the same time. It is a puzzle based upon skin color, diction and economics.

And, rarely do you see a film that speaks to all of these issues at once. My mom last night said she resented Crash because she did not believe that we have such a huge race problem in LA. I laughed at her and said it is as much about race as it is opportunity.

We have Latino vs. Black riots in our prisons, in our High Schools, in our inner city. But, those happen in "other communities" And, most of the "Westside Liberals" like my family live far enough away that they never have to actually look at what is really going on. They do not want to regonize the mess schools are in our urban areas, the lack of access to decent medical care, the unemployment rate that is twice the average for blacks that it is for whites. They do not think that they are in any way part of the problem. They waste our tax dollars on inefficient and silly measures, without focusing on the true problem. The only time they actually had to recognize the simmering pot was during the riots after the verdicts.

I think this movie did make those people think. And recognize it is a much bigger problem than they wanted to admit. And that part of the problem may start with them.

OK - off soapbox. Slam away.

Nobody I know that doesn't like Crash as a film denies that we have a HUGE HUGE race problem in America...and Los Angeles is a huge example of that. However, some people weren't convinced that Crash really dealt with all of those issues that well. I mean there were moments of excellence and then there were moments of just shallowness.

This article says it all for me:

There are many people in SoCal, most importantly, white liberals, who fail to recognize the depth of the economic/racial divisions here.

They think race is a problem, but not in their own back yard. They have friends of all colors, but do not realize that their friends fall into a certain economic class and have to a great extent, have adapted to the norms of white society. They fail to look in their own backyard to recognize the issue. And, as I have said before, it is as much about economics as it is about race. When the Sandra Bullock character wanted to call another locksmith to fix her door when she saw the Latino locksmith had tats, I know of many people who would have thought the very same thing and had simlar urges.

What got me was how angry so many of the characters in the film are. And, I also recognize that in many people I see. And, when there is a crises, we still can and will look beyond race or economics to try and help.

Crash brough these issues up to the surface, and at least exposed them in a way that another film had not in a long time.

It is not a perfect film. It is not subtle. But, I don't think it would had the same effect on those who saw it if it was.

Yeah but at the same time, I think a lot of people who praised Crash also are praising to make it look like they aren't racist and that it really is in someone else's backyard.

I'm not saying that everyone is doing that or maybe even the majority, but I feel that there are people tend to praise things regarding race just so they won't have to feel like they're racist themselves.

AND AGAIN, I know that there are people who watched the film and really did look at themselves in a new light and/or they felt Crash really was the best one out of the five nominees.

Going into last night I had seen 3 of the 5 films

Brokeback was the best with Good Night a close second . Without Hoffman, Capote does not get nominated as Best picture. I just rented Crash so in a few days I will voice an opinion as to which I like better Brokeback or Crash

Until I see Crash, I cannot compare. Oscar has a history of not rewarding the best sometimes but thems the breaks. For all Brokeback supporters, I am sorry but the movie is always there whether or not it got awards
