CONGRATULATIONS CRASH AND REESE!#0

Posted: 3/6/06 at 2:00pm

I couldn't be happier for both of these wins. Crash was an amazing movie that really made people think. I'm not saying Brokeback Mountain was a bad movie, it just wasn't as good as Crash. It does not mean I'm homophobic, it just means one movie was better than the other. I think the voters really had it hard this year both movies stirred up feelings in viewers.
and to get mad because BBM wasn't a winner is in poor taste.

I'm also thrilled that Crash and Reese won, but does this really merit a new thread? There are already tons of existing threads on the Oscars where you can post your thoughts.

There weren't enough Oscar threads for you to choose from?

I stand corrected, you are as vapid as they say.

Eye-dina was in Crash! She was one of the Chinese people in the back of that van.

Didn't you guys know that?

I'm totally threadjacking here and this is the wrong thread to pose this question but I simply have to ask the people who say that Crash makes you think--did you really not think that racism existed in the world before Crash? Did you really not think that racism was hypocritical and wrong before seeing Crash? Glad your little world was shattered by a movie about Hollywood's little world.

Can't the same question be asked of Brokeback and homophobia?

My answer to the jack: I think for me the depth of the racism was what was eye opening. I am from the South and Black/White racism was a HUGE issue, even within my own family. I just don't think I had ever realized the extent of the Asian, Hispanic, Middle Eastern, etc. aspects of it. But that's just me.

Well of course not. But I am willing to bet a lot of people had no idea just how prevalent racism still is in today's society.

I don't think Brokeback Mountain is about homophobia though. It's an element of the film, yes, but it's not political propaganda saying homophobia bad. Crash is definitely about racism, which isn't bad, I think it's about the only way the movie would have mattered to me, but I'm just saying I didn't find it particularly revelatory. But perhaps I should just give others less credit.

I didn't think so, either, but I've been told time and again how wrong I was.

I found Crash riveting. Did it alter my life? Not really? Did it change my way of thinking? No. Chicago didn't either, and I thought that was the right choice for Best Picture in its year.

.Chicago didn't either, and I thought that was the right choice for Best Picture in its year.

As did I, but that was only because I felt those 5 movies nominated were only ok and wouldn't have nominated any of those 5 for Best Picture. Now that was a SAFE year.

Well, I don't think we'll ever see the day when a movie that might actually be the best picture of the year wins best picture, but oh well.

I liked Crash, don't get me wrong. I don't know, I feel the same way as Vietgirl.

I just don't think that BM was superior to Crash. I've said that all along, as have a lot of people. I just don't believe that there was some sort of secret plot at work.

BTW, I was only talking about the 2002 Oscars, not the 2005 ones.

You're right Ronin, I don't think I ever had my personal Best Picture win the Best Picture Oscar.

Kringas, a lot of people have different opinions, and I think many people felt strongly on both sides of the Crash vs. BBM debate that no matter who won, you would see the losing side venting.

Perhaps, but I was fully expecting BM to win, so I'm as suprised as anyone. Not that I thought it was better, I just thought everyone had bought the hype.

If it had been reversed, I wonder what the Crash people would be blaming. Screener-gate is genius.

Hollywood's rampant racism? It's inability to accept the fact that they don't want to admit to themselves that they are all that racist? That Hollywood is a ultra liberal world that overly accepts gays?

I think that is what a lot of people would've said had BBM won.

Everytime something or someone loses, anyone could think of tons of reasons that are semi-valid.

BTW, I personally didn't like Crash as a whole, but appreciated aspects of it. BBM is one of the best movies I've seen, personally.

Fair enough. And a lot of people agree with you.

But a lot of us don't, which is why I don't understand why so many are besides themselves over the upset.

I know Kringas. But you know how theater, film, music could be. It makes people really really emotional because when they get to us, they REALLY get to us and we all feel emotionally vested in it.

I felt the same way for Lost in Translation (and an American Splendor snub), Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon...and even though I wasn't old enough to follow it at the time, I'm pissed that Sense and Sensibility was snubbed for director nomination and lost to Braveheart.
