People keep mentioning "Magnolia," but I was more reminded of "Grand Canyon," though the latter is a far gentler take on similar themes. It's the first film this bleak year (so far) that has ambition and feels like the singular vision of an artist, not a studio hodgepodge of opening weekend sure-things.
Bullock is revelatory here. To me, it's the direction she should take in her career. She is fearless. I also though Newton the most compelling character. She, too, deserves a starring role. And Phillipe moves past his pretty boy personna (the bad skin actually helps) to play a baby-faced cop faced with unexpected life turns. He is heart-breaking. What an interesting bit of casting--but the whole film is expertly cast.
