That is really scary. The anticipation is the worst. re: CURSES RITA!! When do you leave? (And what are you taking with you?)

re: CURSES RITA!!

What about photos and that kind of stuff? I've sometimes wondered what things I'd bring with me if my house was on fire, and I concluded that everything could perish, as long as I had a CD with all of my digital photos saved on it.

re: CURSES RITA!!

We went through the preparation for evacuation scenario a couple of summers ago when the fires ran through California. It's VERY interesting to think about what to take!

re: CURSES RITA!!

In addition to personal items:

Take any insurance policies (health, medical and life), deeds, birth certificates, SS cards, any record that you will need in the event the house itself is destroyed or severly damaged. Also if you have IRAs or other moneys invested, take at least some basic records of those - including pension and TSA.

It might not be a bad idea if you can afford to to have a backup hard drive available to back up data and take it with you. That is of course if the contents of your computer are necessary for you do re-establish yourself.

Make sure you take pictures of your home and its belonging so you can prove a claim for insurance purposes.

If you have pets, don't forget some pet food as well.

Because I live in EQ country, I have thought about this more than I ever wanted to. I have it all kind of in one area of my Condo so I can grab it up quick.

YWIW - Because of our little experience, we ended up creating basically the same thing - an emergency file box that has everything we would need to 're-establish' ourselves - at least on paper.

And pet food is very important!

re: CURSES RITA!!

I'd just skip the plane and take a road trip. I'm sure there are some hotels in Dallas that aren't booked. You could try my personal favorite - The Melrose. Corner of Lemon and Oak Lawn, if I remember correctly.

It's only a block or two from the gay bars. WOO!

re: CURSES RITA!!

Let me also add that it is also good to have some backup emergency supplies in your car trunk. Water, some food, a flashlight, candles, pet food, and having some cash stashed at home and in the car never hurts as well. It is always good to have a few hundred dollars in relatively small bills available.

I think I will take an earthquake over a hurricane. At least it is over relatively quick. This waiting for it to hit land is just awful.

re: CURSES RITA!!

Thanks for your concern. re: CURSES RITA!!

But, yeah, I live in Dallas.
It is supposed to have mellowed down to a Category 2 Hurricane by the time it hits us here, so...

re: CURSES RITA!!

I've heard it's going to be better than that.. to a category 1.

re: CURSES RITA!!

Recent news is that its gotten so strong that it might still be a 2 by the time it hits Dallas, but I hope it is a Category 1 when it gets here.
