Can Kate Winslet Be Nominated For Best Actress and Supporting Actress?

In this Oscar Buzz article, they name Kate Winslet and top choices for Best Actress in ETERNAL SUNSHINE and also as Supporting Actress in FINDING NEVERLAND.

A) Has this ever happened before in the Actress or Actor catagories?
B) Do you think it will happen?

Sigourney Weaver was also nominated for both GORILLAS IN THE MIST and WORKING GIRL in 1988. It happens more than you'd think. Jaimee Foxx also has a shot at that this year with COLLATERAL & RAY.

The PROBLEM, is that CKeaton seems to enjoy making fun of the retarded. I, personally, don't see anything funny in that but aparantely he does.

She can and will. Deservedly so. And even though I haven't seen Being Julia, I hope that Kate wins it for Eternal Sunshine, cuz God knows it was ever so long ago that none of those geriatric bastards will remember it for Best Picture. I also think Jim Carrey should get a nom, not the win, but a nomination, considering that his performance as Andy Kaufman was unjustly snubbed and this performance has everything he does well contained in it.
Johnny Depp will probably win despite Jamie Foxx's turn as Ray. They always give the awards a year late, anyway. Crowe got it for that atrocious crap Gladiator because they didn't give it to him for the wonderful The Insider. Bill Murray or Johnny Depp should have won last year, but Sean Penn's had been a long time coming, even though what he won for was histrionics and overacting in a movie that will be forgotten in about two years.
Bill Murray may be a surprise nomination this year because of that very same event. He'll get the nomination because they rooked him last year.
Word. Word, indeed.

I don't think Winslet will win herself an Oscar this year. Natalie Portman will take home the Supporting Actress award for CLOSER and her part in NEVERLAND (while she was brilliant) wasn't as strong as some other leading roles this year.

Matt_G - according to that article, Kate Winslet's performance in FINDING NEVERLAND isn't a contendor for LEADING Actress, but SUPPORTING Actress. They name her for LEADING Actress in ETERNAL SUNSHINE.

you can't compete against yourself within a category IF you're actor--they changed those rules some time ago...i believe in the 1940s Barry Fitzgerald was nominated as actor and supporting for the same role in the same film! Going My Way 1944...it was probably after that...

HOWEVER, directors and other artists can receive multiple noms in one category--Soderbergh's 2 noms for director come to mind...
