I agree - in fact, I actually believed ROTK would win 10 awards, and lose for Best Song. That was the only one that surprised me (although I do love the song -- it helped me cope with a death in my family).
The other award that came less as a surprise and more of a relief was when it won Best Adapted Screenplay; I think the writers did a phenomenal and even miraculous job of condensing Tolkien's tome into a dynamic and wholly cinematic work. It was a tough category, and I was afraid that the writers (Philippa Boyens in particular) wouldn't be recognized. All the other awards it won were pretty much a shoo-in.
In any case, some years you get a sweep and some years you get a lot of indecision. What I find interesting about this year is that, since not one of the films has stood out of the pack, we're gonna be arguing for a long time about what was the best film of 2004.
My vote is for The Incredibles & Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
