Mamie - that version was not so popular. It gave Clara's Uncle Drosslemeyer a strange hold over her and he was an instrament in her arrival at womanhood, something Kevin MacKenzie went even further with in his newer, totally panned version for ABT.

The success of the Gelsey Nutcracker was based solely on the dancing of Baryshnikov and Kirkland. The "Snow Pas" was gorgeous. The Snow corps was totally lifted from a Kirvo version.

DG - Did you see the article on the front page here about Frank Rich interviewing Sondheim at UCLA in March? If I were there I'd plan on going. I'm truly NOT the world's greatest Sondheim fan (except for Follies) but somehow I think Frank Rich interviewing ANYONE would be terrific. Sondheim only more so!
