Most of those pictures were posed and take by the Village Voice photographer, and they were NOT taken on the chaotic first night. (The riots are referred to in the plural because they kept reoccurring each night from June 27th to July 3rd, except for June 30th and July 1st, when it was raining.)

Even after reading that lengthy article, I still think gay and homosexual are synonyms, like straight and heterosexual are. I don't feel that the way we each experience our individual lives has to do with the termonology. You can call it homosexual, gay, queer or whatever but it is what it is.

I really enjoyed reading the article, but I'm in the same boat as Kad in that gayness is alive and well, at least within the group I hang out with.
I do think he was a little quick to shove aside some of the gay icons that he feared younger gays might not be able to relate to. When Film Forum showed Johnny Guitar to packed house of mostly gay men, both young and old, everyone appeared to be howling with laughter and I strangely began to feel bounded to the group in the theater very strongly. Maybe some guys in their 20s don't have an affinity for Joan Crawford because they haven't been exposed to her; the teachers that were lost in the 80s ARE being replaced now though, and I don't hear the death knell of gay culture dying ringing anytime soon.
