I was back in my little hometown in the midwest this weekend. I feel lucky to be from a blue state and the people there have always been pretty open (read Garrison Keillor's latest book for a flavor). My partner and I took a trip to a neighboring village to do some shopping and when we got there we were visually assaulted by about a dozen people lining the street with huge yellow banners saying "homosexuality is a sin". I have to say that it was such a deflating moment for me. I always thought of my home as a haven of tolerance and acceptance but it was like someone threw a bucket of cold water on me. We briefly talked with them and learned quickly that it would do no good. I left dejected.

I just had to share.

I sing for myself. I sing when I want, whenever I want to, just for me. I sing for my own pleasure. Do you understand that?

BT - I'm very sorry to hear about that. Here in our bastion of conservatism in SoCal, my partner and I have an amazingly uncomplicated reality. Everyone at his school knows the situation - I'm just another one of the 'spouses' - and NO ONE exhibits any problem with it whatsoever. And, I'm the one who takes his mom to doctor's appointments and such, and everyone knows me as her son-in-law (as partnered to her own son) - and again, no problems whatsoever.

It IS disheartening to hear of situations like the one you experienced. Updated On: 12/13/04 at 02:43 PM

Yes, Beav, that's my cousin. By the way, in case you all were salivating, he's the only one in the family who does half-naked calendars... re: Can the adults please smoke? (Pt.2)

I have never had a problem at home before, my family likes my partner better than me! Everyone is so accepting except these people. I did have to tell them that they should update their wardrobes - the long flowered dresses flatter no one, even hateful people. They didn't seem to accept my fashion advice. I was glad that the shop keepers were trying to get them sent away but they were on public land and didn't require a permit. If Wisconsin wasn't so cold I would have a "Conservatives Suck" banner made up and stand out there myself, but I'm not going to freeze my buns off for them!

Oh, BT. The funny thing is I can picture you rolling a red carpet out in front of them doing your Joan Rivers impression.
