Can the adults please smoke? (Pt.2)

I was back in my little hometown in the midwest this weekend. I feel lucky to be from a blue state and the people there have always been pretty open (read Garrison Keillor's latest book for a flavor). My partner and I took a trip to a neighboring village to do some shopping and when we got there we were visually assaulted by about a dozen people lining the street with huge yellow banners saying "homosexuality is a sin". I have to say that it was such a deflating moment for me. I always thought of my home as a haven of tolerance and acceptance but it was like someone threw a bucket of cold water on me. We briefly talked with them and learned quickly that it would do no good. I left dejected.
I just had to share.

BT - I'm very sorry to hear about that. Here in our bastion of conservatism in SoCal, my partner and I have an amazingly uncomplicated reality. Everyone at his school knows the situation - I'm just another one of the 'spouses' - and NO ONE exhibits any problem with it whatsoever. And, I'm the one who takes his mom to doctor's appointments and such, and everyone knows me as her son-in-law (as partnered to her own son) - and again, no problems whatsoever.
It IS disheartening to hear of situations like the one you experienced.

Yes, Beav, that's my cousin. By the way, in case you all were salivating, he's the only one in the family who does half-naked calendars...

Posted: 12/13/04 at 2:52pmI have never had a problem at home before, my family likes my partner better than me! Everyone is so accepting except these people. I did have to tell them that they should update their wardrobes - the long flowered dresses flatter no one, even hateful people. They didn't seem to accept my fashion advice. I was glad that the shop keepers were trying to get them sent away but they were on public land and didn't require a permit. If Wisconsin wasn't so cold I would have a "Conservatives Suck" banner made up and stand out there myself, but I'm not going to freeze my buns off for them!
