I keep seeing promo spots for NBC's new hospital-drama, MERCY. They *just* concluded ER!! There's also HOUSE, GREY'S ANATOMY, NIP/TUCK, GENERAL HOSPITAL, THREE RIVERS, SCRUBS, PRIVATE PRACTICE, etc. etc. etc. Yeah, each series is traumatically different (PUNS!), but I do get sick (PUNS!) of the repetition.
Police/Detective/Crime shows

It just makes you appreciate original settings that much more. I loved how THE WEST WING was a series that explored the life of The White House. Don't recall any other show set in the White House. CHEERS was set in a bar, and I don't believe another sitcom has been since. 30 ROCK is uniquely set in a TV Studio.
I really don't crave unique settings, I'm just sick to death of all the Law & Orders and CSI's and hospital shows!!
But what else is there?
I hate all these hospital shows. They piss me off. And it isn't even ABOUT working in a hospital most of the time. It is who is doing who and who cheated on Doctor blahblah.
Occasionally they have a kid come in with a scar and wipe the blood out.
Boo-hoo.
What else is there?
How about...
- a traveling circus
- an office building cafeteria
- Wall Street
- a post office
- an animal shelter
- a church
- a shopping mall
- a cruise ship
- a farm
- a restaurant
- a dance club
- those places people go to take surveys/test studies
The location can be any average, everyday place or somewhere bizarrely unique - just let the show be good, interesting, and set somewhere OTHER than a hospital! CSonBroadway is right, it's not really about the location anyway. It's about who is screwing who, no matter where it's set!
A deserted Island, a small boat, a three hour tour, a storm, a shipwreck! Oh wait...
Ideas for settings for next seasons sitcoms:
A post office
A vegan snack cake factory
A sweat shop
A sweet shop
A chicken coop
A day care center
A doggie day care center
King Tuts Tomb
A Post Office, a semi automatic weapon and a bell tower! Must See TV!
"Described as "A Post Office, a semi automatic weapon and a bell tower!", NBC's new half hour comedy series, USPS, reunites stars Roma Downey & Della Reese as two best friends who must cope each week with another wacky assassination attempt from their hilariously insane co-workers!! The Mail has never been this much fun and it's only this fall on NBC!"

Well, there was that awful show with Geena Davis, Commander in Chief. That sort of only further exemplifies the brilliance of The West Wing, though.
Also, 24 almost always has a simultaneous White House story to go along with the terror story. They've produced some really great characters and performances in their White House stories.
Are you guys going to call your show "Going Postal"?

ER was pretty good at showing what life was like in an ER. At least according to my mom anyway. She was a nurse before she got married and spent a lot of time in ERs.
I've got a scifi/fantasy piece that I'd like to shop around if I could.
A sweat shop + a sitcom= ???
"WHO"S YOUR DADDY" The antics of the staff of a Paternity Test Clinic!

You forgot young, hip professionals in New York City shows.
A grocery store!
Fresh ideas have been tried & have bombed
Brimstone
The Magician
Cop Rock
Carnvale - Visually stunning but made no sense
Yes but fresh ideas that have triumphed:
Teens and twenty somethings with mysterious super powers
people stranded on a strange island
A family owned funeral parlor.
There have been success stories no question but without cable 6 Feet Under would have never aired

I think you're wrong, a little. I mean, most of these "places" have been explored in television shows, they just weren't successful. However, the shows that have been successful have been the standard cop drams and hospital dramas, so that's what they're going to exploit. Makes sense.
Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip (or something like that) showed the workings of a comedy show before 30 Rock for example.

They should make a show about crystal meth and Irish Hookers.

A situation comedy about a group of Arsonists.
How about a show about a message board? Anyone?
