My son is a drama major in high school but he hates musicals. He thinks they are all cheesey (doesn't get that from me). His forte is improv. He is extremely funny and has excellent comedic timing. The funny thing is though, he seems to always get cast in dramas (he blows me away every time). Anyway, how difficult is it to get into college theatre departments if you don't sing (and won't even try)? He is very musical as he is phenomenal on the guitar. He is also an honors student. Also, what college programs could you recommend based on this info? We need to start seriously looking now because he will be a sophomore next year. I believe his personality would do well in the northeast. Please help. I really appreciate your comments!

College drama departments usually do plays as well, unless I'm mistaken. My college (Salem State, in Massachusetts) does both. I'm majoring in Theatre with a concentration in Performance (Salem doesn't offer a major in Musical Theatre, unfortunately for me, so I might transfer to another college for that). Uarts has an amazing Acting major program that is seperate from the Musical Theater major.
Forgive my ignorance but what and where is Uarts?
Most schools will have a sub-branch within the Drama Dept. that specializes in Musical Theater performance. Your son should only worry about nailing his audition for the Drama Dept. (in my school it's just a monologue, I believe) and acquiring as much experience as he can while in high school. Make sure he specifies that he is not interested in the musical theater track. Ideally, he should have some kind of voice training for his projection but no formal singing training is required to get into most theater program if you don't want to be in the Musical Theater track. Good luck!
Thanks Ray. Before you read on let me just say that I enjoyed your celebrity of the day so please don't hate me for this but I saw in your profile that you are from Gainesville and I went to Florida State I know FSU has a great drama dept and I also have a friend who was a drama major at UF- she went to school with that guy who was on Caroline in the City (can't remember his name but he was nominated for a Tony a couple of years ago). I know with so much competition to get into theatre departments, I thought they would weed out people who had less talents than others. He has a very strong voice and excellent projection. I would love for him to check out FSU because they also have a great music department. However, I really think he would do well in the northeast. btw, I'm married to a Gator and it is hard. Only fun-spirited rivalry here. Thanks for anwering my post.
