At this point, I think we all hate Tom Cruise.

He does not deserve my hatred... but I certainly do not like him. Didn't like him much before, and much less now. (And it's not because he's a scientologist, 'cause I like Kirstie Allie (sp) and John Travolta.)

Elphaba, Thank you re: Can you hate somebody you don't know?

You're welcome Namo I've always been rather indifferent to Tom Cruise (although I thought he was marvelous as Lestat even though he was way too old), but now he's really beginning to creep me out.

I can agree with you on QotD, I tried to watch that movie and found I couldn't sit through it and it's my favorite of the vampire books. However I was very skeptical about Interview with the Vampire after I read the book, but I thought it was pretty good. The only thing that really gets me is Antonio Banderas as Armand. As much as I love Antonio he was all wrong for that part.

Cruise was the weak link in that film for me. I've never been a fan of the shrieky midget.

Unfortunately I have to go with those who say they hate Bush. It's wrong - but I really hate that loser and what he's doing to the country.

The person who I hate killed a close family-friend when I was 12. I have every reason to hate him.

I can't really hate a celebrity -- I certainly dislike some though. I think that you can hate people who do things like kill others for the fun of it or for a cause that you don't agree with.

That's basically what I think (^^)

re: Can you hate somebody you don't know?

Abba Rabbit was just BURSTING to tell people that story.

The real question that I think Captain is getting at but (surprise!) probably couldn't figure out how to word is:

Can you know somebody you've never met in person?

Well, barring the philosophical point of view that nobody can ever truly know somebody else, I would say yes. You can know somebody you've never met in person. If they reveal enough of their basic point of view, their philosophies, the direction of their moral compass, their sense of humor about themselves or lack thereof, through electronic communication, for example, I believe it is possible to know somebody you've never met in person.

And over time grow to have strong feelings about them. Good or bad. Love or hate. Although Captain and Rathnait might argue otherwise.

**** you namo. i didn't even want to say it, i was using it to show that you can hate someone you don't know. if i was "bursting" to tell that story, as you say i was, why would i be so vauge? why wouldn't i include every detail of what happened? how DARE you even say that. the person who died is my hero. you're a horrible person.

re: Can you hate somebody you don't know?

Yes, I am. And thank you for proving that my theory that you can hate somebody you don't know is correct. Luv ya forever for that.

Now, at 11:13 you were vague. But with no "tell me more, tell me more posts" begging you to get specific, you revealed more at 3:48.

Probably hoping for several, oh my god that is so awful for you Abba, posts. What happened?, you hoped they'd ask. That's such a shame, here's a virtual hug, you wished they'd say. And let's face it, you do have something of a history of fishing for those sorts of affirmations around here.

But, hate on!

re: Can you hate somebody you don't know?

well, for me, its not hate, but simply a bad vibe. i can be walking down the street or just sitting outside and see a kid walk by who just sends off these bad vibes. whether its the way they are acting or what they are talking about, and im sure that if i got to know them, id hate them.

re: Can you hate somebody you don't know?

I think the answer is the same answer to "Can you love someone you have never met in person?"

Scary enough--I think the answer depends on the person. Or, perhaps, the person may experience these feelings but find they are not present upon actually meeting the person.

It's actually rather fascinating because I suppose this discussion is about whether it's ok or sane to hate someone online as opposed to the real world. But, at what point does the virtual world become the real world for someone? And, isn't it reality to hate someone's online persona? Or at the very least--their opinions and ideals.

I think the important thing is to remember to keep a clear head about the differences between the virual world we share here and the reality--and to make sure we live in the reality. That we focus on the reality. We have to also expect that meeting someone in reality will very seldom resemble how you know them in this virtual world.

All the time. It's actually easier than hating someone you do know.
