Oh, come on, PJ. Are you really trying to spin the blame for this story onto Obama? Are you really saying that they were responsible for its spread? This story gathered its own steam within minutes, and comments such as 'unfortunate' and 'no place in a presidential campaign' were the least of their problems.
It's just another example of Obama's passive agressive ways. It also shows that Obama is not the candidate for "Change" or "Hope" . He is one of the most manipulative politicians to come around in a long time.
That's not from Maureen Dowd. That article is by Katherine Seelye, who is actually a big Clinton supporter. And we all know George Stephanopoulos is rabidly pro Clinton.
Just to keep facts straight, here's what Maureen Dowd actually has to say about the remark...

And, by the way, the Clinton camp sent out the first email on the bittergate remark. And not only did they fan that one, they took a giant bellows to it. So, what's your point? This is politics. Talk about fanning flames.
Marc, there's a difference between 'Change' and creating an instant fairyland of politicians walking side by side holding hands. He never said he was changing all things instantly to utopian perfection.
It wasn't Obama or his supporters who set him up as the perfect "messiah" of change who could heal us poor misguided folk. He just wanted to work to change the way things were done in Washington. It was his detractors who set him up as the Messiah. And with that set up , who could win? If he tries to stay above the dirt, he's mocked as elitist and out of touch. If he practices any type of normal political strategy, he's called a hypocrite.

One of the things that has soured me on Ms Clinton is her uttter inability to take responsibility for her actions- whether it's her war vote or her comments of a few days ago she, like our current president, seems unable to say "I was wrong."
i did it. me and rove. well, more him than me. we was in cahoots with that wolf in messiah's robes, saint bammy of the church of killin' whitey.
What in heaven's name are you all going ON about?
