sorry, you've got the wrong plumbing for me. even if i swung that way, i would like to think i would have the good sense to avoid anyone who thinks their own life is a sin. that just screams krazy with a capital k.

Someone told me once that confession was only set up, so priests could hear the secrets of the people and report any traitors to the government? I forget the details or the origins. I'll ask my friend again, but basically it was just a way to screen who was against the government.

Bill - that's not true.

My mother used to think that the priest gave you a secret code word during confession, and that's what they were asking you for at communion (as a way to see if you had gone.) Some of the fanciful tales concerning Catholicism can get pretty entertaining.

Yeah that doesnt make any sense because the government at the time of the creation of confession was the Roman Empire....way too big of an empire to worry about individual traitors.

Ok Ok you got me they did worry about traitors. From Jesus' crucifixion up until 313 AD, Christianity was illegal, but it still had confession that whole time. So it wouldn't make any sense for Roman Empirical government to start a government-run program through a religion which it forbade.

i don't take iassue with the fact that it's unlikely that they started it, but rather with the stupidity of the comment that the empire was too big to worry about traitors.

Rudy should not have taken communion.

His marriage status and/or his abortion stance are reasons why he cannot. If he was not divorced and did not support late term abortion, he probably would have been given a pass. These 2 together are deadly.

Roxy, as has been stated in this thread, Rudy could only be denied communion if he had not confessed a mortal sin. Since supporting abortion and getting a divorce are not mortal sins, he could not be denied communion.

I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

First of all, to support abortion is, to the church , a sin . In addition, the divorce matter precludes him at the very least.

Remarrying after a divorce is a big no no. If he was an average Joe & keept his feelings secret, the priest obviously would not know. As a public figure, it is public knowledge so the Church can deny him .

Unless he goes to church on Sunday & holydays, he also cannot receive. I know from whence I speak as I am Catholic.

just a historical note... though it is factually incorrect to say that the empire was too big to care about traitors, looking at the letters between Pliny the Younger and Emperor Trajan, the Romans themselves really didn't care about persecuting Christians. Historically, it was really difficult to be persecuted first because anonymous accusations were not meant to be taken seriously and second because ample opportunity was given to the persecuted to prove that he or she was not Christian. Any persecution was done more as a formality than out of true hatred for "traitors." While crucifixions of Christians absolutely did occur, it can be gathered that the relations between Romans and Christians were not as tense as is usually thought...
