With the Oscar nominations being announced tomorrow, I was wondering what you guys thought were the standout films/performances that didn't get as much credit as they deserved and/or were flops and/or probably won't get Oscar love.
I'm still trying to compile my list but the three performances that come to mind are Melissa Leo (the best female performance on screen this year) in FROZEN RIVER, Richard Jenkins in THE VISITOR (that final image of the film was just so brilliant as was his performance), and Beyonce in CADILLAC RECORDS (I thought she was really fantastic...the film was alright but Beyonce really surprised me).
Any others?
And as a whole, I really enjoyed THE SECRET LIFE OF BEES.
I didn't think it was a 'Hallmark' movie of the week at all, which is the main complaint I've heard about it. Was it one of the best movies of the year? No, but it was one of the most unfairly criticized, IMO. And all of the women (even Alicia Keys) were great. It fell apart a little in the last fifteen minutes or so, but I thought it was strong, beautiful, and very moving.
