Matt-
The best cheap chinese restaurant is Empire on 96th and Broadway.
They have a dinner special to die for.
A Zillion choices:
Soup
Entree
Rice $6.95
It is the best chinese for the price.
Hope you feel better.

My fave in Chinatown is Joe's Shanghai--and it's cheap!
They have crab-and-pork soup dumplings that always make me happy. They're the most delicious dumplings you've ever had--and they're filled with soup! You have to bite a little hole and sip out the broth, then you can eat the dumpling.
It's at 9 Pell Street in Chinatown, between Bowery and Doyers.

Joe's is great but the long lines suck.
I prefer a dim sum place on Mott street.
But it is only good at lunch time.

Ollie's is good though. They are owned by the same owners as Carmine's.
Ollie's is not expensive but he was asking for cheap.
Personally my favorite chinese is Shun Lee near Lincoln Center.

Posted: 11/22/04 at 10:12pmI second Joe's Shanghai. I think there's also a branch in midtown (46th?). The pork-and-soup dumplings are AMAZING. I think Bway_Matt said they're the creators of that type of dumpling, and as they're some of the best I've eaten ANYWHERE! (I've become something of a dumpling connosieur.)

Tiff the one in midtown does not compare to the one in China Town.
Hop Kee ties though.

I agree, Corine, but soupy dumplings are soupy dumplings!
Where's Hop Kee?

don't knock them unless you've tried them Ellie.
Hop Kee is on the far side of Chatham Square, right before the start of the Bowery...
