Any suggestions for cheap hotels in NYC? Anything around $50 a night that's safe?

You absolutely cannot get a safe hotel room in NYC for $50.
If you don't mind using a communal bath down the hall, try on of the YMCA's - a room is about $65. There's the Westside YMCA at 63rd and Central Park West (close to Lincoln Center), and the Vanderbilt YMCA on 47th between 2nd & 3rd Ave.
The Westside Y has some rooms with private baths, but you can't pre-reserve them. Just reserve a reuglaur room, then when you arrive, ask if they have any with priovate baths available.

I actually didn't mean $50, I meant to type $80.
But that does sound cool. I'll check that out.
Thanks!

Hello Matt.
Check out Hotel 17. East 17th Street between 2nd + 3rd Avenues.
Rooms run approx. $79 a night for a twin/one person. The (clean) baths are communal + the staff helpful/adequate. Plus it is in a safe/convenient location, about 4 blocks off of Union Square.

Posted: 5/11/04 at 10:24amI don't think that it's possible to stay in NY for under $200 a night, and not worry about contracting some disease from bird or mice droppings.

Posted: 5/11/04 at 10:30amoh yes it is. I did hotwire and got 75/night at the club quarters which was nice. I stayed at Park Central for 119 off one of those hotwire/expedia/priceline. Look into those. Holiday Inn midtown was not bad at all either.

It's possible to get a decent, clean room for under $200.00 if you search a little. I don't think i've ever seen anything under $100.00 and would be scraed to stay there if I did find something for that price.
Under $200.00 rooms can be found at The Milford Plaza if you don't mind a room the size of a closet and at the Skyline. Skyline looks like crap fromthe outside but the rooms are clean and spacious for the price and the interior of the hotel is clean and not bad looking at all.
I personally like The W Tuscany, The Time and the Plaza but, those are all a bit pricy.

Posted: 5/11/04 at 1:06pmThe Skyline Hotel in Hell's Kitchen is a wonderful place, the rooms are a tad small, but nothing unmanageable. It's on 48th and 10th, right near the theatre district but a little quieter than Times Square, and they have parking right next door.

I like the Skyline - the rooms are actually bigger than most of the budget hotels in the Times Square area, and parking is free, if you are driving to NYC. I've never paid more than $100 a night there.
The bar gets pretty wild with neighborhood Latinos on Fri. and Sat. nights.

I've found that the Belleclaire is very reasonable, 99-120 for a shared bath. I"ve stayed there every time I've gone to New York and I've never had a bad experience.

Hotel Portland on 47 th ( around the corner from Palace theater )
Rooms about $ 100 but unfortunately they are the size of a shoe box. They might have bigger rooms for more $$. It has great location & is inexpensive & clean.
If you are just looking for a place to sleep, it seems to be ok. Unless they took them out, they had lockers in the lobby like they used to have @ train & bus stations to store your stuff without going up to the room.

Thanks for all your help, guys. I've tracked down a few affordable ones under 100 a night. I usually stay with my friends in the city so I haven't had to get a hotel there in something like 10 years, but they'll be out of town so I gotta shell out the cash.
And Dame, I am one of those cheap premiscous hussys, so I'll fit in perfectly at one of them!
