I love chestnuts, but for the past few years, I've bought them and found that many of them were rotten. Last year, the whole pound that I bought were inedible. This year, only about half were.

Is there a way of telling whether chestnuts are good before purchasing them?

I am a big chestnut fan. After buying rotten ones many times I tried smelling them before putting them in my bag. They should not have any smile at all. It takes awhile, but it is certainly worth it. If they smell off, I just don't take it. Also, they should be glossy and firm if they are fresh. Ever try chestnut stuffing?

My suggestion would be to buy the jar of shelled chestnuts. Rosst them briefly in the oven to warm, or toss in hot butter on the stovetop in a saute' pan.
