Because appointments to the supreme court are for life - so Bush will continue to find the biggest bible-beating jackass to continue his legacy...

Rehnquist is one of the most conservative justices in the history of American jurisrudence. However, he served with dignity.
This is not a loss in terms of the balance of the Supreme Court. I can not concieve how any appointment by this President could be more conservative than Rehnquist.

I know about it. I'm asking you why you're so worried about it. Name one way your life will change because of a new Supreme Court appointment? I'm assuming that Bush will appoint a conservative. Isn't that what Rehnquist already was? So, what's the difference?

ConvinceMe - there are now 2 openings on the supreme court. Bush's appointees could tip Roe v Wade - and that would affect a lot of us.

Let see, the right to choose, search and seizue, the right of government to hold enemy combatants. The separation of church and state. Nothing much that might affect my life. And, while I am not gay, gay rights may be fundamentally affected if someone who is a Christian Conservative somehow makes it onto the Court.
You lost Sandra Day O'Conner, a moderate, and replace her with Roberts, a Conservative. Now, Rhenquist dies, and the whole balance of the court is further swayed torwards the right.
Scalia as the Chief Justice (which is who I think Bush will propose). I think I am going to be sick.

If Scalia is nominated there will without doubt be a filibuster and he will never be confirmed.

I don't know that you can say with certainty that Roberts is conservative. That's what everyone said about Sandra Day O'Connor. I see Roberts as a moderate, just like O'Connor. I see no difference in this.

Who would you prefer? Thomas? Kennedy will not get the appointment, because he is too moderate. With two justices now to be elected, oy. I hope you are right, but am not so sure.
EDIT - he could of course just try to appoint the new Justice as the Chief . . . that could be a double oy.

Rehnquist being replaced with a conservative is a wash. This is nothing to be upset over.
(Granted, if Gore or Kerry was President, this would have been an opportunity to swing the Court towards a more moderate or liberal slant).
Roberts is the one to be concerned with--his replacing the swing voter.

JRB - you are correct. I think in this political climate Bush has no political capital and might have to re-think appointed an ultra conservative.

This basically it - It's upsetting because I wish these appointments could have been made under a much stronger (democratic) administration.

JRB - you are of course correct. Roberts will be made to appear more moderate than he might be when compared to who might replace Rhenquist.
And, in this political climate, I can see Bush trying to use the issues that come before the court to shore up his base and try and distract from the mess in the SouthEast. I don't think it will work, but, nothing really surprises me anymore.
