When staying in hotels, Ian McKellen rips pages out of the Bible. (Yes they are the verses that speak about homosexuality). It's really so childish. I wonder if he rips pages out of the Koran as well.

Goth I am not familiar with any hotels that put the Koran in the rooms- do you know of any?

Yes, Goth, I'm sure he rips the pages out of every Koran he happens upon in a motel night table.

He wouldn't have to do it if the Bible had been translated correctly.

I've always found the presence of those Bibles in night-table drawers to be extremely offensive.

Why can't people bring their own goddamn bibles?

"I've always found the presence of those Bibles in night-table drawers to be extremely offensive."

You could always call the front desk and ask them to remove it.

Or put up the money to have "And The Band Played On" placed in hotels across America.

It's just so ANNOYING to have to push the goddamn bible back when I put my condoms and lube in the drawer.

Yeah, Randy Shilts's somewhat nonfiction book is the gay equivalent of the bible.

Goth, I say this in all sincerity: MARY!

I'd almost forgotten that gay = AIDS.

Thanks, Goth.

I think he meant to say "Angels in America."

Or maybe "Liza with a Z."

No, he would have said the Gordon Merrick collection but he realized it would be too revealing.

One time I put the lube back in the drawer but it wasn't fully shut and it leaked. All. Over. The. BIBLE.

I think you should have to ask the front desk FOR the bible. Not to ask them to take it away.

I do believe that the whole "bible in hotel room" began with one being left at the front desk for people to request. I wonder how many people would do so.

Personally, I, too, find the placement of a bible in my hotel room offensive. I always remove it and stick it on a shelf high-up in the back of the closet. It just creeps me out.

I put my bible in the bathroom and then use it for toilet paper.

*Amber zooming in with the unpopular opinion*

I think it is disrespectful and vandalism. I don't read the King James version of the bible and have never even cracked a hotel copy, but I still don't agree with defacing it. I think he IS feeding into the belief that those passages condemn us and that gay people who identify as Christian and Christians who support us are just ignoring certain passages. The battle will be won by proving to people that MANY things in the bible were put there for political gain, controlling the masses and in some cases a very outdated need for protection. We fight with intellect, not destruction. Some kind of common ground must be found. In my opinion, he's doing much more harm than good.

As for the bible being there in the first place, I don't really get that. I know one group's soul purpose is to purchase bibles and put them in every hotel room. If it really bothers you, you can ask upon booking that it be removed. I just shove it to the back of the drawer and ignore it.

Amber - I completely agree. I admire McKellan and his strong opinions but the Bible is a holy book to millions of people and it is hotel property. It seems petty and destructive to use this method to express himself.

I love your typo as to the Gideons "soul purpose" - or maybe that was wonderfully intentional? I know nothing about the Gideons other than their belief that a Bible may, in fact, provide some comfort to some lonely and desperate person somewhere. All joking aside, the intent is quite human and helpful, no?

I'm with Amber on this one. To me, the Bible is more ancient fictional literature than anything else, but I don't think he's doing anyone any good by defacing it.

And, I can't even tell you the last time I noticed a Bible in a hotel room.
