Church Bans Interracial Couples From Membership

Reminds me of the time I saw a lady who use to go to our church at the grocery store. She knew I was gay and said to me,'Just because I think gays are disgusting and they are sexual deviants and are going to burn in hell for living a life of sin does not mean I am homophobic.' She then said she does not judge,it's just common knowledge that's what gays are. My Mom nor I have ever spoken to her again. We see her all the time and just ignore her and she honestly has no clue as to why.

Same with these church goers. They feel their hate and racism is just what it is and justified. They are totally clueless when people call them out as being hateful and racist because to them, they don't think they are.

I'm not so sure about that, romantico. I think a lot of them use the bible and their "beliefs" as carte blanche to be as nasty as they want to be and have an excuse for it. It's an interesting mentality that's in all humans that when told they're superior to others, most will blindly act on that. Look at Nazi Germany. I know that example is overused but as a Jew, growing up it was beaten into my skull about that type of thinking. There's a very interesting documentary I watched in the early 90's about a middle or high school that was broken up into two teams with one team being told they were superior to the other and told the inferior team they were just that. The film followed just how saying that simple thing to these two groups changed how they acted so drastically. And I think religion is the exact same thing. When you go to church and are told you are better than this group or those people, you do believe it. But you also believe that you have the right to not like them and be mean to them because you were told it was ok.

When people call them out on being what they've become I think they know that's exactly what they are, but putting it into words or putting a face on it is scary since that means they would actually have to answer for these horrible choices they've made just because someone told them they could do it. And really, is there anything more Christian than just blindly following?

You could be right. Maybe I'd prefer them being just ignorant instead of evil and hateful. I know this particular lady at our church was not evil just ignorant and not knowing any better. However,I see a lot of these people like Tony Perkins and Maggie Gallagher and Bryan Fischer who I just know don't buy the crap they spew. I think these people are the furthest thing from being moral and Christ like and have a separate agenda. So,you could be right.

I'm over the idea that it's just ignorance.

The first fight I ever remember my parents having was over my father's (joking) use of the n-word. And my mother hit the ceiling. They were born two years apart--and two miles apart, probably, in the same small Southern town--and yet he embraced a way of thinking that she rejected.

If we're talking about uneducated rural 80-year-olds, then maybe--MAYBE--I'll accept that it's simple ignorance. Everybody else has all the information they need to choose to reject bigotry.

I have to say that I agree with them. I mean where does it stop?

Today it's black and white, tomorrow it's man and dog.
